Job description

Research Scientist The Research Scientist for Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology position is based within the gastro-esophageal cancer research environment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, focusing on translational and laboratory-based discovery to advance understanding and treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. The Research Scientist for Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology plays a key role in planning, directing, and executing complex scientific studies that support institutional research priorities in cancer biology. In this role, the Research Scientist for Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology contributes directly to UT MD Anderson's mission through collaborative, multidisciplinary research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with gastro-esophageal cancers. The ideal candidate for the Research Scientist for Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology role demonstrates strong scientific expertise in cancer biology-related research and the ability to independently design, execute, analyze, and troubleshoot laboratory experiments; specific education, experience, and licensing preferences are not provided. Responsibilities Research Planning & Execution Plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and participate as a team member in research projects focused on detection and elimination of gastro-esophageal cancers Independently execute, interpret, and troubleshoot experiments to address key scientific questions Develop and improve research methods and recommend solutions to experimental challenges Molecular & Cellular Biology Techniques Perform subcloning, genetic knockout or overexpression of target genes, ELISA, Western blotting, q-PCR, IP, CHiP assays, and protein-protein or RNA-protein interaction studies Conduct drug screening experiments and analyze resulting data Apply expertise in molecular biology, immunology, and cancer biology to elucidate disease mechanisms and signaling pathways Animal & Clinical Sample Research Perform mouse handling, including tumor injection from clinical specimens, drug treatment, data analysis, and genetic mouse model handling Process clinical samples such as human blood, tissue, and ascites using appropriate cryopreservation techniques Perform basic histologic techniques on formalin-fixed tumor specimens Data Analysis & Scientific Advancement Utilize basic bioinformatic knowledge to analyze data and generate new hypotheses Search and review scientific literature to introduce innovative ideas and emerging methodologies Stay current with technological and scientific advancements in GI medical oncology research Collaboration, Training & Reporting Assist in preparation of research grants, manuscripts, and grant reports Ensure accurate data collection, database entry, and reporting at designated research stages Train students and laboratory personnel in experimental techniques, microscopy, imaging, and laboratory software Communicate and collaborate with staff, faculty, and investigators within and outside UT MD Anderson EDUCATION Required: Master's Degree Natural sciences or related field. Preferred: PhD Natural sciences or Medical Degree WORK EXPERIENCE Required: Four years Experimental or scientific work or two years Experimental or scientific work with medical degree or No experience required with PhD.
