What is a data scientist research associate?

A Data Scientist Research Associate is a professional who applies statistical analysis, machine learning, and data management techniques to conduct research and extract insights from complex datasets. They often work in academic, government, or industry research settings, supporting projects by designing experiments, analyzing large volumes of data, and interpreting results. Their work helps inform decision-making, advance scientific knowledge, and develop new data-driven solutions. Typically, they collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and may contribute to publishing research findings.

What are some typical challenges faced by data scientist research associates when working on interdisciplinary projects?

Data Scientist Research Associates often collaborate with experts from fields such as engineering, biology, or social sciences. A common challenge is bridging the communication gap between disciplines, as each may have its own jargon and methodologies. Additionally, integrating and preprocessing diverse datasets can be complex due to varying data formats and quality. Overcoming these challenges requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and a willingness to learn about domain-specific concepts to ensure productive teamwork and successful project outcomes.

Job description

Company Overview

The State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) manages more than $178billion in assets, including those of the fully-funded Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). It operates at a level often seen in top-tier global asset managers, and 61% of its investment professionals hold a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter. SWIB serves over 703,000 WRS beneficiaries and is committed to securing the financial future of those who serve Wisconsin. The organization offers a modern workspace, hybrid work options, competitive compensation, and a range of benefits.

Team Overview

The Data Services & Engineering team builds, implements, and maintains industryโ€‘leading systems and platforms that support SWIBโ€™s diverse investment portfolios and strategies. The team acts as a trusted advisor and partner to the business, leveraging technology to deliver maximum value, align with future direction, and operate according to industry standards.

Position Overview

Lead the design, development, validation, and deployment of advanced analytics, AI, and machineโ€‘learning solutions that support dataโ€‘driven investment decisionโ€‘making. Own the technical lifecycle for analytics products from problem framing through data requirements, modeling, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing iteration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and deploy solutions using GitLab (merge requests, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, release management) and Terraform, establishing strong engineering practices and reproducibility.
  • Design, evaluate, and deploy AIโ€‘enabled analytical solutions that measure output quality, detect hallucinations, and ensure reliability for decisionโ€‘making.
  • Implement dataโ€‘quality, validation, and AIโ€‘evaluation frameworks; define reliability metrics, testing protocols, and monitoring controls to guarantee accurate, traceable, and explainable outputs.
  • Develop analytics applications and lightweight frontโ€‘end interfaces (PowerBI, Streamlit, React, or similar tools) to communicate findings and drive adoption, applying UI/UX principles for usability and clarity.
  • Deploy solutions in cloud environments (Azure or AWS), coordinating with engineering and security to ensure secure, scalable, and costโ€‘aware deployments.
  • Utilize dataโ€‘warehousing technologies such as Snowflake to support analytics initiatives, collaborating on data modeling and performant query patterns.
  • Communicate complex concepts clearly to technical and nonโ€‘technical stakeholders; translate investment needs into analytical roadmaps and measurable outcomes.
  • Serve as a liaison across investment teams and partner functions (IT, Operations, Legal, HR, Strategic Planning, etc.) to support change management and adoption of analytics solutions.
  • Act as a senior team contributor by providing design input, conducting code and analysis reviews, sharing patterns and best practices, and coaching junior staff through pairing, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree required; advanced degree preferred in finance, business, engineering, computer science, computational economics, mathematics, data science, or related discipline.
  • Progress toward or completion of the CFA designation preferred.
  • 5+years of experience in data science, analytics, quantitative research, or similar roles.
  • 2+years of experience designing and deploying AIโ€‘enabled analytical solutions that measure output quality, detect hallucinations, and ensure reliability for decisionโ€‘making.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for advanced analytics, data engineering, and model development in production contexts.
  • Proven experience deploying and operating production code using GitLab, including CI/CD, mergeโ€‘request workflows, automated testing, and release management.
  • Experience with Terraform to provision and manage cloud infrastructure as code.
  • Experience building and deploying machineโ€‘learning models using modern techniques (regression, classification, clustering, timeโ€‘series/forecasting) with robust evaluation practices and sound statistical reasoning.
  • Experience implementing dataโ€‘quality frameworks, validation controls, and reliability metrics/processes for analytical outputs and reports.
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms (Azure or AWS) for data storage/processing and for deploying analytics solutions, with familiarity of security and operational considerations.
  • Experience with dataโ€‘warehousing platforms such as Snowflake to support scalable analytics initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence decisions through clear storytelling and stakeholder partnership.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively, coach junior staff, and elevate team standards through reviews, reusable patterns, and documentation.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to disciplined delivery (documentation, Jira ticketing, and best practices).
Benefits & Compensation

Competitive total cash compensation based on AON industry benchmarks. Comprehensive benefits package. Educational and training opportunities, including tuition reimbursement. Hybrid work environment with flexibility to work remotely, subject to weekly office presence as required by distance. Relocation reimbursement offered to the Dane County area. Commitment to ethics and compliance through SWIBโ€™s Ethics Policy and Personal Trade Approvals Policy.

Employment Requirements

Position requires U.S. work authorization. All staff have flexibility to work remotely under the Hybrid Remote Work Policy, with a weekly office presence dependent on distance from the office. Relocation reimbursement is available to the Dane County area per our policy. Employees are subject to SWIBโ€™s Ethics Policy and Personal Trade Approvals Policy.
