Both roles are common in various industries, but they differ in complexity and scope.

What is a data scientist contract?

Data Scientist contract jobs are temporary positions where professionals analyze and interpret complex data to help organizations make informed decisions. Unlike full-time roles, contract data scientists are hired for a specific period, often to work on particular projects or to provide specialized expertise. These contracts can range from a few months to a year or more, and may be offered through staffing agencies, consultancies, or directly by companies. Contract roles offer flexibility and exposure to diverse industries, but typically do not include employee benefits such as health insurance or paid time off.

What are some common challenges faced by data scientists working on a contract basis, and how can they be addressed?

Contract data scientists often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new teams and workflows, managing varying project scopes, and ensuring clear communication with stakeholders who may not have technical backgrounds. To address these, it's important to establish clear objectives and deliverables at the outset, maintain proactive communication, and document work thoroughly. Building strong relationships with both technical and non-technical team members can also help ensure project success and smooth collaboration.

What does a contract data scientist do?

As a contract data scientist, your job is to provide independent support to a client for a freelance project or assignment. In this role, you may analyze a database to obtain useful information, use statistics to interpret the results, help identify trends within the industry, and make recommendations about the best course of action. Contract data scientists often help analyze historical data, build or refine templates and dashboards, assist full-time employees, and use predictive modeling to evaluate future company needs. The length of each contract varies, but it's possible to work with the same company for a year or more.

Job description

We are looking for the right people - people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.

ABOUT LANDMARK

Landmark, a Halliburton company, builds software and data platforms that help the global energy industry make better decisions. Our products span subsurface interpretation, well construction planning, reservoir simulation, and digital operations. These are tools used daily by engineers and scientists at the world's largest energy companies. The Engineering organization owns the infrastructure, cloud operations, and deployment frameworks that make Landmark's product portfolio available to customers across the globe: in the cloud, at the customer site, and in environments where connectivity cannot be assumed.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As the Senior Data Architect, at Landmark, you will architect and design the next generation data platform Landmark applications will be built on. The Platform Delivery Managers own the team and its delivery commitments; you own the architecture.

You will represent the data platform in Landmark's architecture community, partnering with the Chief Architect to ensure that all teams understand the data platform and the best practices to use it. You will also review application architectures to ensure proper adoption and usage of the data platform

Job Duties

Data Platform Architecture Ownership

  • Define and maintain the architecture for Landmark's data platform layer, including architecture diagrams, documentation and architectural decision records.

Security, Compliance, and Certification Alignment

  • Partner with Landmark's security team to ensure the data platform architecture satisfies security requirements and compliance frameworks, including SOC 2, regulated-site certification standards, and enterprise security policy, and that those requirements are encoded in the data platform's architectural standards rather than handled case by case
  • Define the architectural patterns for tenant data isolation and data residency.

Cross-Team Partnership

  • Work with the architects in domain application teams to explain the proper use of the data platform
  • Review application architectures to verify the usage

Architecture Community

  • Serve as the data platform representative in Landmark's architecture community
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related STEM discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant time spent on data layers including exposure to the following : relational and unstructured data, data virtualization and federation, ETL, lake houses, medallion architectures and data platforms
  • Demonstrated track record of defining architectures at a platform level
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce architectural specifications, decision records, and interface contracts that are precise enough to be implemented and clear enough to be understood by teams that did not write them
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical peers across teams through the quality of architectural reasoning rather than organizational authority
  • Experience with at least one of AWS and Azure, their database offerings and other services such as object storage, Kubernetes

Preferred:

  • Experience with both AWS and Azure native services
  • Background in oil & gas

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and encourage you to apply even if your experience does not match every item in the preferred list.

Candidates having qualifications that exceed the minimum job requirements will receive consideration for higher level roles given (1) their experience, (2) additional job requirements, and/or (3) business needs. Depending on education, experience, and skill level, a variety of job opportunities might be available, including Senior Software Architect.

WHY LANDMARK

This role owns one of the key underpinnings of Landmark's solutions - a comprehensive, modern, performant data foundation.

You will work with the platform engineering teams and the Chief Architect to define the data foundation that the rest of Landmark builds on top of. Your architectural decisions will affect every product team in the organization and every customer who deploys Landmark software. You will have direct access to the architecture community, executive sponsorship through the CTO, and the relationships with security, compliance, and enterprise stakeholders needed to make architectural commitments that hold.

We build small, high-ownership teams and invest in the quality of every person on them. Engineers here co-author the product strategy alongside product management and domain science: the art of the possible is an engineering contribution, not a function that sits upstream. The experiences we design ensure that customers remain in control of the decisions that matter, never passengers in their own workflows.

We offer competitive compensation, a strong IC career ladder with a visible path to Principal Architect, and a business where architecture quality is a direct competitive differentiator in enterprise and regulated-market deals.

World Class Benefits:

At Halliburton, we're committed to providing you and your family with a comprehensive and affordable benefits package - which means we offer support for your physical, emotional, financial and parental needs, both now and in the future.  When you join our team, you'll have access to a wide range of resources designed to help you thrive at work and at home.  By clicking here, you can review a summary of the benefits available once you join.
