Is a data scientist in high demand?

Yes, data scientists are in high demand across many industries due to the increasing reliance on data-driven decision making. The role requires skills in programming, statistics, and machine learning, and job growth is expected to continue as organizations expand their data capabilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, programming (often Python or R), and data analysis, usually supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with machine learning libraries (like scikit-learn or TensorFlow), big data tools (such as Hadoop or Spark), and data visualization platforms is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for translating complex data insights into actionable business strategies. These skills and qualities are essential for extracting value from data, driving informed decisions, and effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by data scientists when working with real-world datasets?

Data scientists often encounter challenges such as missing or inconsistent data, unstructured formats, and noisy information in real-world datasets. Cleaning and preprocessing data to ensure its quality can be time-consuming but is critical for building accurate models. Additionally, data scientists may work closely with domain experts and other team members to better understand the data's context and ensure their analyses align with business objectives. Overcoming these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills and effective collaboration within cross-functional teams.

What is data science?

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, algorithms, and systems to extract insights and knowledge from structured and unstructured data. It combines skills from statistics, computer science, and domain expertise to analyze and interpret complex data sets. Data scientists work with large amounts of data to identify patterns, make predictions, and help organizations make data-driven decisions.

What is the difference between Data Science vs Data Analyst?

AspectData ScienceData Analyst
Required skillsStatistics, programming (Python, R), machine learningData visualization, SQL, basic statistics
Work environmentDeveloping models, predictive analytics, researchReporting, data cleaning, descriptive analysis
Tools usedPython, R, Jupyter, TensorFlowExcel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI
Industry usageTech, finance, healthcare, e-commerceRetail, marketing, finance, healthcare

Data Science and Data Analyst roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope. Data Scientists focus on building predictive models and advanced analytics, requiring programming and machine learning skills. Data Analysts primarily handle data cleaning, reporting, and visualization. Both roles are essential in data-driven industries, but Data Science is more technical and research-oriented, while Data Analysis emphasizes interpreting data for business insights.

What does a data scientist do?

As a Data Scientist, you are qualified to work in such diverse fields as research and development, politics, advertising and marketing, technology, healthcare, government, and higher education as well as multiple others. In general, your duties and responsibilities will be to compile and analyze relevant statistics and turn those numbers into algorithms that reveal insights that can be used by other researchers in their areas of study. Data Science can reveal things like consumer buying habits or the likelihood of success for a course of action. Other duties might vary, depending on your unique field of specialty. Related areas in which a Data Scientist might wish to focus include work as a Data Analyst, Machine Learning Engineer, and Project Manager.

Job description

Who We Are
Catalis is a leading government Software as a Service (SaaS) and integrated payments provider, powering a wide range of government operations at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels. Our innovative solutions are designed to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and improve the delivery of government services to the public. At Catalis, we are committed to leveraging technology to make government interactions simpler, faster, and more accessible.
What we Offer
Catalis is a fast growing and award-winning technology company that serves small urban and rural municipal governments across Canada. We offer competitive compensation, full paid vacation, and comprehensive health & dental benefits. We focus a lot of energy on professional development, offering free access to unlimited Udemy courses for personal and professional advancement, as we want our employees to ride the wave and grow with our business. We strive to be an example of a successful high-growth technology company in Alberta, and our team members depend on each other to make it happen.
This opportunity is based at Catalis' office in Old Strathcona (Edmonton, Alberta). Our new office includes an innovative vibe, stand-up desks for all staff, foosball games, an active workplace enrichment committee, fitness challenges, an office dog, lounge areas, and more!
The Opportunity
Catalis is looking for a Technical Shared Services Manager to lead a high-impact shared services team of eight professionals. In this role, you will build the playbooks, tools, and standards that define how Catalis converts legacy host-system data into its growing suite of SaaS solutions-spanning Court Management, Official Land Records, Criminal Justice, and Jury-for state and local government customers across the country. You will also play a key role in evolving the team's practice as Catalis shifts from on-premises implementations toward cloud-based SaaS delivery. If you thrive in a fast-moving environment, bring deep ETL expertise, and know how a PS organization operates and scales, this role offers real ownership and room to grow.
What you Will do
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a shared services team of eight data conversion professionals, overseeing capacity planning, workload allocation, and career development across all four product lines.
  • Engage proactively across the organization partnering with Product Management and Engineering on platform functionality and tooling, supporting Sales with scoping and estimation, and collaborating with PSO colleagues on staffing, prioritization, and delivery quality.
  • Scale the conversion practice developing playbooks, methodology documentation, data mapping standards, estimation tools, and sales-support templates that enable consistent, scalable, and measurable delivery across all product lines.
  • Serve as the technical authority for data conversion guiding the team through design, build, testing, and validation of conversion jobs and overseeing performance tuning and issue resolution for time-sensitive deliveries.
  • Champion quality standards, conduct peer reviews, and enforce data hygiene and validation practices before deliveries reach customers.
  • Actively evaluate and adopt AI-assisted tooling to accelerate mapping script development, automate repetitive transformation logic, and improve overall team throughput.

Requirements
What you Will Need to Succeed
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on ETL experience; proficient in SQL scripting, stored procedures, and Microsoft SSIS packages.
  • 4+ years managing a technical team in a Professional Services or embedded PSO environment within a software company, with a clear understanding of how PS delivery, sales, and product teams interact.
  • Proven ability to build conversion playbooks, estimation tools, and methodology documentation in a maturing or fast-growing product environment.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Microsoft SSIS, SSMS, and Visual Studio, plus working familiarity with a range of ETL and data integration platforms (e.g., Informatica IDMC, Talend/Qlik, AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, Boomi, or similar).
  • Strong proactive communicator, comfortable engaging directly with Product Management, Engineering, Sales, and PSO leadership to negotiate priorities and advocate for your team.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong process improvement mindset, high sense of urgency, and a track record of driving results in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Because this position has access to criminal justice information, you must be able to complete Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) related training and pass a secondary FBI Level background check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with or active use of AI-assisted tools (e.g., Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar) to facilitate SQL/ETL script development, data mapping, and documentation.
  • Experience defining and applying data quality scoring frameworks for conversion validation-such as completeness, accuracy, and referential integrity metrics or pre- and post-load reconciliation processes-to objectively measure conversion quality prior to customer acceptance.
  • Experience coordinating work across near-shore or off-shore development resources in a distributed team environment.
