What is a data science startup?

A Data Science Startup job involves working at an early-stage company that leverages data science to build innovative products or services. Employees typically wear multiple hats, working on data analysis, machine learning models, data pipelines, and sometimes even product or business strategy. The role often requires strong programming skills (Python, SQL), statistical knowledge, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment. Since startups have limited resources, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a willingness to experiment are crucial. It’s a great opportunity to gain diverse experience and make a significant impact in shaping a company's data strategy.

What are the typical challenges faced when working at a data science startup?

Working at a data science startup often involves managing ambiguity, adapting to frequently changing priorities, and balancing multiple roles due to lean team structures. You may be responsible for the entire data pipeline—from data collection and cleaning to building models and presenting findings—making flexibility and resourcefulness essential. Tight project timelines, evolving business goals, and limited initial resources can also be common, so being proactive and self-motivated helps you thrive. On the positive side, these challenges offer significant opportunities to learn rapidly, take ownership of impactful projects, and shape both the company's products and your own career trajectory.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a data science startup, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Data Science Startup, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, and a solid understanding of statistics and machine learning. Familiarity with data visualization tools, cloud platforms, and relevant certifications such as Certified Data Scientist or AWS Certified Data Analytics are highly valued. Adaptability, creative problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills that set standout professionals apart in this environment. These skills are vital for driving innovation, efficiently handling rapidly changing projects, and collaborating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting.

Job description

Are you a product leader with a strong technical understanding of AI, machine learning, and data who enjoys turning complex technology into products that solve real business problems?

We're looking for a Lead Product Manager - AI/ML to join a growing Canadian technology company at the intersection of mobile data, identity, and digital trust.

This is a newly created role focused on building the intelligence layer behind products that support digital onboarding, authentication, identity validation, and fraud prevention. You'll work closely with Data Science, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and customers to take ML/AI solutions from concept and pilots through to production.

This is an opportunity to join a collaborative product team where you'll have significant autonomy and the opportunity to help shape both the product roadmap and the company's approach to AI-powered products.

 Who You Are

  • A technically strong product professional with a solid understanding of machine learning, AI, and data
  • Comfortable working with technical teams on ML delivery, modelling, feature engineering, and data products
  • Able to take complex technical concepts and translate them into clear customer and business value
  • Someone who enjoys moving between technical, business, and customer conversations
  • Comfortable working in a growing environment where priorities can shift and you may need to wear multiple hats
  • Collaborative, low-ego, and willing to jump in wherever needed
  • Self-directed and accountable, with the ability to take ownership without waiting to be told what to do
  • Curious and motivated by building new products rather than simply maintaining existing ones

 Work Type

  • Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid - 3 days per week onsite, typically Monday-Wednesday)
  • Job Type: This is a newly created position

Requirements

 What You'll Do

  • Own the product lifecycle for AI/ML-powered data and trust intelligence products
  • Define product requirements and roadmap priorities across feature engineering, feature stores, models, and intelligence products
  • Work closely with Data Science, Data Engineering, and Engineering teams to move ML models from development through production
  • Lead customer discovery, pilots, and proof-of-value initiatives and use learnings to shape the product roadmap
  • Translate technical ML capabilities into practical products and use cases for customers
  • Develop go-to-market strategies and product positioning for new AI-powered offerings
  • Define product success metrics and work with technical teams to evaluate model performance and customer outcomes
  • Collaborate across Sales, Marketing, Finance, Technology, and Product to bring products to market
  • Communicate product vision, roadmap, progress, and business value to internal and external stakeholders

 What We're Looking For

  • 6+ years of experience in product management, data science, data engineering, analytics, or a related technical discipline, with experience moving into or working closely with product
  • Strong understanding of machine learning delivery lifecycles and ML modelling
  • Familiarity with supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised learning
  • Strong understanding of ML concepts including precision, recall, model performance, evaluation, and modelling frameworks
  • Experience taking AI/ML, analytics, or data products from discovery through pilot and into production
  • Strong ability to work with Data Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, and other technical teams
  • Experience translating technical capabilities into customer problems, product opportunities, and business outcomes
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across technical and business stakeholders
  • Comfortable working in a small or mid-sized, fast-moving environment where priorities can shift and individuals take on broad responsibilities
  • Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and initiative
  • A collaborative, low-ego approach to working with others

Nice to Have

  • Experience in fraud analytics, financial services, SaaS, identity, authentication, or telecommunications
  • Experience with onboarding, fraud prevention, risk, identity verification, or decisioning products
  • Experience working with proprietary or large-scale data products
  • Experience building or managing products involving APIs, data platforms, scoring models, or decisioning systems
  • Experience in a startup or growth-stage environment

Benefits

  • Base Salary: $130,000-$155,000
  • Annual Performance-Based Bonus & Paid Time Off
  • Health & Wellness Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision benefits to support your overall well-being
