How much do data science startup jobs pay per year?
What is a data science startup?
A Data Science Startup job involves working at an early-stage company that leverages data science to build innovative products or services. Employees typically wear multiple hats, working on data analysis, machine learning models, data pipelines, and sometimes even product or business strategy. The role often requires strong programming skills (Python, SQL), statistical knowledge, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment. Since startups have limited resources, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a willingness to experiment are crucial. It’s a great opportunity to gain diverse experience and make a significant impact in shaping a company's data strategy.
What are the typical challenges faced when working at a data science startup?
Working at a data science startup often involves managing ambiguity, adapting to frequently changing priorities, and balancing multiple roles due to lean team structures. You may be responsible for the entire data pipeline—from data collection and cleaning to building models and presenting findings—making flexibility and resourcefulness essential. Tight project timelines, evolving business goals, and limited initial resources can also be common, so being proactive and self-motivated helps you thrive. On the positive side, these challenges offer significant opportunities to learn rapidly, take ownership of impactful projects, and shape both the company's products and your own career trajectory.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a data science startup, and why are they important?
To thrive in a Data Science Startup, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, and a solid understanding of statistics and machine learning. Familiarity with data visualization tools, cloud platforms, and relevant certifications such as Certified Data Scientist or AWS Certified Data Analytics are highly valued. Adaptability, creative problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills that set standout professionals apart in this environment. These skills are vital for driving innovation, efficiently handling rapidly changing projects, and collaborating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting.

Job description
We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.
Ford Energy is a newly formed, wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company dedicated to accelerating U.S. energy independence. Leveraging Ford's century of manufacturing excellence and world-class battery energy storage systems (BESS) technology, Ford Energy designs, manufactures, and services grid-scale and commercial DC battery energy storage systems (BESS). Ford Energy is uniquely positioned to capture the growing demand for reliable, US-built energy storage systems. We are not just building batteries; we are building the infrastructure for the next generation of the American grid.
Why Ford Energy?
At Ford Energy, you have the backing of an industrial manufacturing powerhouse with the agility of a dedicated energy startup offering industry leading technology. We offer a competitive compensation package including performance-based bonuses, Ford vehicle discounts, and the opportunity to shape the energy strategy of one of the world's most iconic brands.
In this position...
The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards associated with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing operations. This role serves as the site subject matter expert for industrial hygiene programs and provides technical leadership to identify, assess, and mitigate employee exposures to chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards.
The Industrial Hygienist will support a high-hazard manufacturing environment involving battery cell handling, module and pack assembly, electrolyte-containing systems, energy storage equipment, electrical testing, thermal processes, material handling, and maintenance operations. The position partners closely with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Occupational Health, and EHS teams to ensure regulatory compliance, implementation of best practices, and protection of employee health.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do...
1. Program Leadership & Regulatory Compliance
SME Guidance: Serve as the site's Industrial Hygiene Subject Matter Expert, providing technical guidance to leadership, operations, and engineering teams.
Program Management: Develop, implement, and continuously improve site IH programs to ensure full compliance with OSHA, state, local, and corporate occupational health requirements.
Audits & Training: Lead IH training programs, support Management of Change (MOC) reviews, and participate in internal audits, regulatory inspections, and incident investigations.
2. Exposure Assessment & Risk Monitoring
Sampling & Assessment: Design and execute qualitative and quantitative exposure monitoring plans (personal and area sampling) for physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards.
Battery-Specific Hazard Evaluation: Evaluate and mitigate specialized risks including battery dusts/materials, solvents/VOCs, electrolyte constituents, thermal emissions, noise, lasers, and radiation.
Data Management: Maintain the site IH database, analyze exposure trends, and translate complex technical data into clear, actionable reports and dashboards for leadership.
3. Hazard Control & Engineering Collaboration
Control Implementation: Investigate potential overexposures and collaborate with Engineering and Operations to design, validate, and optimize engineering controls (e.g., local exhaust ventilation, dust collection, process enclosure).
Mitigation Strategy: Apply the hierarchy of controls to systematically reduce workplace risks.
Vendor Management: Manage third-party IH consultants and analytical laboratories, including defining project scopes, reviewing proposals, and overseeing budgets.
4. Chemical Safety & Medical Surveillance
Chemical Management: Oversee the chemical approval process, maintain exposure inventories, review Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and lead the Hazard Communication (HazCom) program.
Medical Surveillance: Partner with occupational health providers to support medical surveillance programs (including respiratory protection, audiometric testing, heat stress, and return-to-work evaluations).
Emergency Readiness: Support emergency response planning for chemical releases and battery-related incidents.
Qualifications
You'll have...
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Toxicology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related scientific/technical field.
- Experience: 5+ years of progressive industrial hygiene experience within a manufacturing environment.
- Technical Expertise: Proven experience conducting chemical and physical exposure assessments, managing medical surveillance, and implementing engineering controls (e.g., ventilation, respiratory protection, noise, heat stress, ergonomics, and HazCom).
- Regulations: Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and occupational health standards.
- Collaboration & Communication: Excellent project management and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across all levels (hourly employees, engineers, leadership, and external stakeholders).
- Tools: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and specialized IH data management systems.
Even Better, You'll Have...
- Certification: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential.
- Education: Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Toxicology, or Engineering.
- Industry Experience: Experience in high-hazard, specialized, or cleanroom manufacturing environments (e.g., battery manufacturing, chemical processing, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, automotive).
- Specialized Experience: Background supporting large-scale startup/greenfield facilities and managing third-party consultants.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Work Environments: Ability to work across active manufacturing, warehouse, laboratory, cleanroom, and construction settings.
- Physical Demands: Capable of walking, climbing stairs, and accessing production areas to conduct field assessments.
- PPE: Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection.
- Travel: Ability to travel occasionally to support business operations and benchmarking.
