What is a data science major?

A Data Science major is an academic program that focuses on teaching students how to collect, analyze, and interpret large sets of data to solve real-world problems. It combines coursework in statistics, computer science, mathematics, and domain-specific knowledge to prepare graduates for roles in various industries such as technology, healthcare, finance, and more. Students learn programming languages like Python or R, machine learning techniques, and data visualization skills. The major often includes hands-on projects and internships to provide practical experience in analyzing and extracting insights from data.

What types of projects or problems do data science majors typically work on during internships or entry-level roles?

Data Science majors in internships or entry-level positions often collaborate on projects involving data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, and building predictive models. They might work with real-world datasets to identify trends, automate reporting, or support business decision-making with data-driven insights. These roles typically require teamwork with software engineers, business analysts, and domain experts, offering valuable opportunities to apply classroom knowledge to practical challenges and to develop skills in popular tools like Python, R, and SQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data science major, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Science Major, you need a solid understanding of mathematics, statistics, and programming languages such as Python or R, typically backed by coursework or a related degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools, machine learning libraries, and platforms like SQL, TensorFlow, or Jupyter Notebook is also important. Critical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help you interpret data insights and collaborate on projects. These competencies enable you to extract meaningful information from data, drive decision-making, and succeed in a data-driven environment.

Job description

Company Description
We are a uniquely designed talent agency focusing on the technology sector in the Boston, MA area. Our solution is built for engineers tired of the traditional recruiting experience looking for an Agent to represent them in their current search and/or throughout their career.
They search keywords. We know key people.
Job Description
We are working with a brand new travel startup a short walk from South Station to hire a Lead Data Scientist. Founded by travel industry veterans (KAYAK) they are creating a brand new platform to simplify and improve the travel booking experience.
If you've traveled recently you must have noticed that regardless of the site you visit you find yourself entering the same information over and over again? This is the tedious experience most modern booking sites provide and they are going to fix it.
The Lead Data Scientist will be responsible for real world implementations of Data Mining solutions able to discover patterns in large data sets at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics, and database systems. Machine Learning methods for solutions in the area of Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a vital aspect of their success and they need someone capable of leading this charge.
The client offers 100% paid medical and dental insurance for both individuals and families. They provide a PPO plan as well so there is no need for referrals to any specialists. They also have a 401k match, give you the ability to choose your equipment (including iPhone 6S and an Apple Watch), and an unlimited vacation policy where you are actually encouraged to get away when needed.
For Engineers interested who have no desire to commute into and out of Boston daily, we do also have an office in Westford and you will be able to work from that space 2-3 days/week.
To be considered please submit your resume and why you think you are the right person to tackle this challenge along with any other experience (Kaggle competitions, etc) you feel relevant.
Qualifications
Experience needed:
  • 5+ years of "Data Science" experience (Analytics, Data Storage/Management) outside of research only environments
  • 3+ years of experience with Python and/or R
  • Experience extracting data from databases, writing scripts to parse, clean, combine, and process that data
  • Past experience using predictive analytics, behavior modeling, and machine learning methods to create new products or drive business decisions

About you:
  • Startup experience
  • A desire to be involved in key company decisions in anything tech related
  • The chops to take on major industry players as part of a small, passionate team
