Job description

The School of Data Science (SDS) at the University of Virginia seeks a passionate, self-directed, and team-oriented professional to join its admissions team as an Admissions Counselor. The Admissions Counselor provides comprehensive support for the admissions and recruitment processes for Data Science programs. This role serves as a first point of contact for prospective students, ensuring a seamless and engaging application experience. The counselor position supports strategic enrollment goals through data-informed decision-making, process management, and exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for prospective students and applicants via email, phone, and virtual/in-person meetings
  • Conduct information sessions, webinars, and outreach events highlighting Data Science programs
  • Provide guidance on program requirements, prerequisites, and the programs
  • Assist in developing and executing targeted outreach campaigns
  • Represent the program at graduate fairs and campus/On-Grounds events
  • Collaborate with admissions or marketing teams on data-driven initiatives
  • Coordinate preparation, set up, and logistics for recruitment and yield events across grounds and in the data science building
  • Execute on-campus and off-campus recruitment events, university visits, and fairs
  • Review, edit, and contribute social media content related to prospective and admitted undergraduate and graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field, or any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field;
Experience: 3 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience higher education admissions office, marketing, recruiting, or student services in an educational setting as a full-time employee, graduate assistant, or as a college student.
  • Experience in recruiting, customer service, marketing, or sales in an educational setting, corporate environment, or government industry.
  • Familiarity with CRM software such as Salesforce or Slate
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently as well as collaboratively
  • The successful candidate will thrive in fast-paced, team-oriented, and entrepreneurial environments. They demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with a wide range of constituents. They will have a proven ability to meet goals and competing deadlines and handle confidential information with professionalism and sound judgment. The candidate will bring strong organizational skills plus demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, and technological proficiency.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job requires occasional travel for recruiting activities and or/to attend meetings and programs. The position may require some weekend and evening work and occasional travel.
About the Position
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
  • Anticipated Salary: $50,000 - 55,000, commensurate with education and experience.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Late summer, early Fall 2026.

  • This position is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule following completion of required in-person training and with supervisor approval. Travel to locations in Virginia is required.
