What is a data science consultant?

Data Science Consultants are professionals who use statistical analysis, machine learning, and data modeling to help organizations solve business problems and make informed decisions. They typically work with clients to understand their data-related challenges, develop tailored analytical solutions, and communicate actionable insights. Their expertise spans across data collection, data cleaning, predictive analytics, and data visualization, enabling businesses to leverage data for strategic advantage. Data Science Consultants often work on a project basis, either independently or as part of consulting firms, serving clients in various industries.

How does a data science consultant typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during a project?

Data Science Consultants work closely with both clients and internal stakeholders to understand business objectives, gather requirements, and translate them into analytical solutions. They often facilitate workshops or meetings to clarify goals, then collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and subject matter experts to design and implement models. Regular communication is essential, as consultants must present findings in accessible terms, adjust methodologies based on feedback, and ensure solutions are actionable for the client’s needs. This cross-functional collaboration is key to delivering value and building long-term client relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data science consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Science Consultant, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and experience with data modeling, typically supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau or Power BI), and cloud platforms is commonly required, along with certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Data Engineer. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and business acumen help consultants translate complex data insights into actionable recommendations for clients. These skills are vital to deliver tangible business value, bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders, and drive data-driven decision-making.

How much does a data science consultant make?

Data science consultants typically earn between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior or specialized consultants with advanced skills in machine learning and data analysis can earn higher salaries, especially when working on complex projects or for large organizations.

Job description

About Harver
Harver delivers a suite of automated solutions that optimize talent decisions for some of the world's leading organizations. Rooted in over 40 years of science and rich data insights backed by industrial-organizational and cognitive science, we enable organizations to engage, hire, and grow the right talent in a fast and fundamentally unbiased way.
Our Employee Value Proposition
Putting the right person in the right role is life-changing - for the individual and for the organization. That's not a tagline. It's the reason we come to work. We've applied 40 years of assessment science to one of the hardest problems in business, helping thousands of organizations hire with more confidence and less guesswork. Now we're entering our most exciting chapter yet - new products, a sharpened focus, and a market that genuinely needs what we've built.
The people here are something else. Smart, authentic, genuinely invested in the work and in each other. This isn't a place where you coast - you'll be pushed and expected to deliver. But you'll do it alongside people who care, led by a vision that's worth working hard for.
If that sounds like your kind of place, we'd love to meet you.
Job Overview:
Harver exists to help organizations maximize their Return on Talent Investment - and the Senior People Science Consultant is where that mission gets proven, account by account. Sitting on our People Science team, this individual contributor role owns end-to-end consulting delivery for a book of Tier 1 and Tier 2 accounts, designing and running the validity studies that turn assessment science into evidence clients can act on. You'll move accounts through our DOCUMENT, ADOPT and ROTI, journey, build the ROTI narratives that make the case for skills-based hiring, and partner closely with Product & R&D so what we learn in the field shapes what we build next.
If you're passionate about working in a dynamic, fast-growing company - with cutting edge technology, smart colleagues, and opportunities for development - come grow with us!
In this role you get to:
• Own end-to-end consulting delivery for an assigned book of Tier 1 (global enterprise) and Tier 2 (regional enterprise) accounts, primarily within the US, with some accounts spanning international, global markets.
• Partner closely with the Implementations team during onboarding, conducting job analysis and setting up science solutions so each account is built for success from the start.
• Understand customer challenges and goals, and build tailored solutions with defined success measures - including the KPIs and data strategy (e.g., current versus target attrition) used to track progress.
• Train customers on Harver's solutions so they can adopt and use them efficiently.
• Advance client accounts along the hiring transformation journey.
• Design and execute criterion validity studies and translate findings into client-facing recommendations.
• Own the outcome data collection cadence for your accounts and drive adoption of data-share contract clauses.
• Once an account goes live, partner with the Customer Success Manager to ensure the account executes on its planned strategy and delivers on the value promised.
• Build ROTI narratives grounded in the evidence-strength rubric and Harver framework.
• Contribute account-level outcome data to the ROI Calculator, partnering with the verification team on final ROTI figures.
• Prioritize your highest-value accounts for deeper validation study investment, strengthening Harver's broader evidence base.
• Serve as the science translator for your accounts, helping customers follow best practices when using the Harver solution.
• Partner with Product & R&D, feeding field insight into what we build next.
• Manage the development and release of new products based on customer feedback, collaboration with product and your expertise
• Own your share of compliance and science governance responsibilities.
We're looking for people who have:
Required:
  • Experience in an applied I-O psychology, People Science, or talent assessment role, with hands-on work designing and running validity studies
  • A track record of client-facing consulting - translating data and research findings into recommendations a non-technical business audience can act on
  • Comfort owning a portfolio of accounts independently, including the follow-through to collect outcome data over time
  • Strong quantitative/statistical skills applied to real-world hiring or workforce data

Preferred:
  • Experience in a B2B SaaS or HR tech environment
  • Familiarity with skills-based hiring practices
  • Experience building a business case or ROI narrative for a client or internal stakeholder
  • Experience partnering with Product or R&D teams to shape a roadmap based on field insight

Pssst... you don't have to check all the boxes to apply!
The benefits of working at Harver:
As a global company, our benefits vary by location. Ask your recruiter to provide information about localized benefits. Harverians enjoy:
• A competitive base salary and great incentive program
• Discretionary paid time off - when you need it, take it
• Benefit plan options that give you the flexibility to select the right health care coverage for you and eligible family members
• Retirement savings programs
• Bonus opportunities and employee referral rewards
• Hybrid work environment - Atlanta-based, Tuesday through Thursday in office
