FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEER - PLANT FARLEY
Southern Nuclear Operating Company's Plant Farley Engineering organization is seeking a high-performing engineer with a strong analytical mindset and a desire to become a subject matter expert in the programmatic and technical aspects of nuclear plant fire protection design. This position is based at Southern Nuclear's Plant Farley facility in Columbia, Alabama.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide code and program expertise. Ensure program compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Prepare for NRC and INPO inspections and assessments.
  • Monitor the testing and performance of the fire protection detection and suppression systems.
  • Review design and field changes for accuracy, program impact, and functional testing.
  • Develop and improve Preventive Maintenance (PM) tasks based on corrective actions, performance monitoring, Operating Experience, and PM feedback.
  • Develop and provide technical support for surveillance testing, fire protection pre-plans, and impairment monitoring and reporting processes.
  • Ensure appropriate training, guidance and reference materials are provided to station personnel who perform or review fire protection documentation. Participate in and assess fire drills and emergency response exercises.
  • Review, evaluate and respond to industry Operating Experience.

Job Requirements:
  • Plan, organize and manage work to meet project schedules and changing priorities.
  • Evaluate equipment failures and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Evaluate design changes to plant equipment and systems.
  • Evaluate, monitor and trend plant data for assigned systems and areas of responsibility.
  • Troubleshoot systems, perform predictive and root cause analysis and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Plan assigned phases of preventive, routine and special maintenance programs
  • Perform engineering evaluations of equipment necessary for safe and economical operation of a nuclear plant.
  • Provide guidance and training to employees and contractors on technical issues within assigned systems and areas of responsibility.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Engineering degree from an accredited college or university highly preferred
  • Or Professional Engineer (PE) license combined with four or more years of Fire Protection Engineering experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree in Fire Protection Engineering.

Engineering Experience Desired:
  • Four or more years of fire protection engineering experience preferred.
  • Nuclear power plant experience preferred
  • Membership of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) is highly desired
  • Participation in key industry organizations such as the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is desired.

Technical Requirements:
  • Detailed knowledge of plant procedures, codes and regulations applicable to the assigned area.
  • Detailed knowledge of plant systems and processes.
  • Working knowledge of computer software programs supporting assigned area.

Other Requirements:
  • Selected candidate must live within one hour of the SNC Emergency Operations Facility to support emergency response duties.
