Data Modelling information

Will AI replace data modelers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace data modelers, as their role involves complex understanding of business needs, data structures, and design principles that require human judgment. Instead, AI tools can assist data modelers by automating routine tasks and enhancing productivity, allowing them to focus on more strategic aspects of data modeling. Continuous learning and proficiency with data modeling tools remain important for job security in this field.

Is 40 too late for data science?

Data Modelling is a key skill in data science, and age is not a barrier to entering the field. Many professionals transition into data science later in their careers by acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and tools like SQL or Python. Continuous learning and building a strong portfolio can help overcome age-related concerns in the industry.

How much do data modelers make?

Data modelers typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior data modelers with specialized skills in database design and data warehousing can earn higher salaries, especially with certifications and advanced tools knowledge.

What do you do in data modeling?

A data modeler designs and creates data structures, such as databases and schemas, to organize and store information efficiently. They analyze data requirements, define relationships, and use tools like ER diagrams and modeling software to ensure data integrity and accessibility.

What is the difference between Data Modelling vs Data Analyst?

AspectData ModellingData Analyst
Primary FocusDesigning data structures and schemasAnalyzing data to generate insights
Skills & CertificationsData modeling, database design, SQLData analysis, statistics, Excel, SQL

About the role

As a Data Scientist, you will apply advanced data, programming and quantitative modelling capabilities to support commodity trading and market analysis. You will design scalable analytical solutions, automate data workflows, and develop models that convert complex market data into useful commercial insights.

This role is suited to a technically strong candidate who has a genuine interest in commodity markets and is motivated to develop an understanding of the market fundamentals, pricing dynamics and trading questions behind the data

In particular, your responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing automated data solutions by applying strong programming skills and a deep understanding of data processing pipelines.
  • Processing large and complex datasets from multiple sources and formats, ensuring data quality, consistency and usability for analytical purposes.
  • Applying statistical techniques to develop quantitative models supporting trading, research and strategic decision-making.
  • Building predictive quantitative solutions for areas such as supply-demand forecasting, pricing mechanisms, trade flows and scenario analysis.
  • Working closely with trading and analysis teams to understand business questions and translate them into robust, scalable data and modelling solutions.
  • Proactively identifying and sourcing new datasets, while collaborating with internal IT teams to ensure accurate and reliable integration into internal platforms.
  • Developing dashboards, visualizations and analytical outputs that clearly communicate model results and market-relevant conclusions.
  • Continuously improving modelling methodologies, data workflows and analytical processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy and commercial value.

Job requirements and experience

  • Strong programming skills (e.g. Python, Spark, SQL and other languages)
  • Experience working with large datasets and developing quantitative models using tools such as Dremio, Databricks and Tableau
  • Strong interest in commodities trading (Prior commodity experience is advantageous)
  • A degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, quantitative finance or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of data processing, data modelling, statistical analysis and automated workflows.
  • Language skills: fluent in English; proficiency in Mandarin.
  • Strong team player with a high level of self-motivation and flexibility, capable of working in a trading environment and meeting tight deadlines.
  • Mindset that reflects our values: take ownership, be entrepreneurial and curious, speak up and challenge, act as #TeamRWE across boundaries, foster diversity and inclusion, seek and provide feedback, prioritise health & safety, and drive execution with resilience and purpose

Advantageous, but not essential

  • Grains knowledge (e.g. soybeans) and exposure to agricultural markets
  • What we value most is someone who continuously demonstrates courage, thrives to create impact and seeks to build trusting, collaborative relationships. So, even if you think you do not yet display all of the skills listed above we would still like to hear from you.

Further we welcome applications from individuals who may not be able to commit to full-time roles. At RWEST, finding the right person for the job is our top priority, and we are willing to explore flexible arrangements.
