Data Labeling For Autonomous Vehicle information

What is data labeling for autonomous vehicles?

Data labeling for autonomous vehicles involves annotating images, videos, or sensor data to help machine learning models understand and interpret the environment around the vehicle. This can include tagging objects like cars, pedestrians, traffic signs, and lanes to train algorithms for perception and decision-making. Accurate data labeling is crucial for improving the safety and performance of self-driving systems, as it ensures the models can recognize and react to real-world scenarios. Typically, data labelers use specialized software to draw bounding boxes, segment objects, or classify items in sensor data. The quality of labeled data directly impacts the reliability of autonomous vehicle technology.

What are some common challenges faced by data labelers working in the autonomous vehicle industry?

Data labelers for autonomous vehicles often encounter challenges such as ensuring high accuracy and consistency when annotating complex road scenes, especially with rapidly changing environments and diverse object types like pedestrians, vehicles, and traffic signs. The work can be repetitive and requires strong attention to detail to minimize errors that could impact the performance of self-driving systems. Additionally, labelers may need to collaborate closely with engineers and quality assurance teams to address ambiguities and continuously update labeling guidelines as technology advances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Labeling Specialist for Autonomous Vehicles, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Labeling Specialist for Autonomous Vehicles, you need strong attention to detail, familiarity with computer vision concepts, and a background in data management or related fields. Experience with annotation tools (such as Labelbox, CVAT, or Supervisely), image/video editing software, and sometimes basic programming or scripting is often required. Excellent concentration, patience, and communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital because high-quality labeled data directly impacts the performance and safety of autonomous vehicle systems.

**About the Role**Uber is investing in the platforms, tools, and infrastructure needed to help autonomy partners deploy commercially and serve riders at scale. As the largest on-demand mobility and delivery platform in the world, Uber brings deep expertise in marketplace management, fleet utilization, and local operations-making it uniquely positioned to help partners commercialize autonomous technology globally. We're building the foundation-from vehicle integration to fleet operations to rider experience-to make autonomy work in the real world. As Uber expands autonomous deployments globally, vehicle platform design matters more than ever

As the Lead Product Manager for Autonomous Vehicle Platforms, you will be a critical early leader defining how autonomous vehicles are built to operate on Uber at scale. You will define the technical requirements-from OEM specifications to onboard hardware and software requirements-for vehicles to launch and operate as a high-duty cycle, high-reliability robotaxis on Uber. Your requirements will directly shape production vehicles across multiple vehicle generations and global deployments.

You will define the interface between Uber's platform and autonomous vehicle systems-setting the standard for how autonomous vehicles integrate, operate, and scale globally. You will work closely with a high caliber cross functional team including vehicle strategy, engineering, design, operations, and external partners to translate strategy into concrete vehicle requirements, release criteria, and integration decisions. You will also serve as the primary technical product owner in partner and OEM discussions, responsible for system requirements decisions with long-term implications. This role is ideal for a product leader with strong vehicle systems expertise, experience bringing complex hardware to market, and the judgment to make durable platform decisions in ambiguous, high-stakes environments.**What the Candidate Will Do**- Own the platform strategy and requirements for Autonomous Vehicle Platforms, defining what partner vehicles must support to operate reliably and efficiently on Uber.- Define and maintain minimum vehicle specifications across OEM partnerships and vehicle programs, ensuring each can support Uber's current and future commercialization use cases.- Own the evolving set of vehicle platform requirements across onboard hardware, embedded software, interfaces, and core system architecture, updating them based on partner needs and evolving autonomous technology.- Partner closely with business development and vehicle strategy teams at Uber to align on cost and capability trade offs and roles and responsibilities for our partnerships.- Serve as the primary technical product representative in partner and OEM engagements, driving alignment, resolving requirement gaps, and pulling in the right internal experts as needed.- Drive key trade-off decisions across cost, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability, scalability, and performance to ensure durable platform choices.- Build the mechanisms needed to support execution at scale, including requirements documents, interface definitions, decision frameworks, and readiness criteria.- Communicate roadmap direction, technical risks, requirement changes, and key decisions clearly to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.## **Basic Qualifications**- Demonstrated experience building and launching complex hardware or vehicle products from prototype through production, including managing firmware dependencies, validation, and release milestones.- Experience working directly with OEMs and/or Tier 1 suppliers to define requirements, manage interfaces, and align on development and release schedules.- Strong technical fluency in vehicle systems and architecture, with the ability to make sound product and integration trade-offs across mechanical, electrical, embedded, and software domains.- Proven ability to independently own ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives and drive them from definition through execution.- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience representing technical requirements with senior internal teams and external partners.- Up to 40% domestic and international travel to work closely with OEMs and autonomy partners.## **Preferred Qualifications**- Background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, vehicle architecture, or a related technical field, or equivalent product experience.- Experience in autonomous vehicles, advanced automotive systems, robotics, consumer electronics, aerospace, or other complex hardware domains.- Prior experience in roles such as Engineering Program Manager, Technical Program Manager, Vehicle Line Manager, systems-focused Product Manager, Systems Engineering or equivalent.- Experience defining system-level requirements that span hardware and software and carry across multiple vehicle programs or generations.- Comfort operating in highly technical environments where platform decisions have long-term implications for commercialization strategy. For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$216,000 per year - USD$240,000 per year. For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$216,000 per year - USD$240,000 per year. For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$216,000 per year - USD$240,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp.
