Job Description Summary:
To manage the collection and compilation of information relating to patients diagnosed and treated for malignant cancers and to prepare statistical data on mortality rates and treatment effects. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital. Possible hybrid/remote.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Complies with cancer reporting requirements as set forth in Tennessee Cancer Reporting System Act of 1983.
  • Assists in identification of cases of malignant disease diagnosed and treated within Kirkland Cancer Center Cancer Program.
  • Determines appropriateness of follow-up according to guidelines established by Kirkland Cancer Center and Cancer Committee.
  • Utilizes appropriate electronic records and systems as necessary.
  • Obtains end-results information on status of disease, recurrence, further treatment and length of survival.
  • Promotes continued care of cancer patients through coordination of information with KCC physcians, and communication with other registries, medical facilities and heatlh Adheres to necessary reporting guidelines.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
  • Ensures the quality of abstracted data by performing quality checks of data before it is sent to the state reporting agency and/or ACS/COC RCRS.
  • Follows established procedures for retrieval of cancer registry data from computerized system. Assists in assembly and dissemination of data compiled in cancer registry.
  • Fulfills any request for information or data from the Cancer Committee, member of cancer center medical staff, administration and other departments.
  • Provides coordination for Cancer Committee and cancer conference, as needed.
  • Adheres to necessary reporting guidelines.
  • Meets ACOS/COC standards as they related to Cancer Registry, Cancer Conference, and Cancer Committee. Responsible for communicating ACS/COC standards to the Kirkland Cancer Center staff and leadership.
  • Provide oversight for non-credentialed Oncology Data Specialist as assigned.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
  • Maintains credentialed status by completing the necessary number of continuing education hours.
  • Participates in educational activities of local, state, and national tumor registrar associations. Attends lectures, symposia and training programs as directed or available.

JOB SPECFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
  • Associate's degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Computer Science, or other related field PLUS Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credential AND 1 years of hospital-based cancer registry experience.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTFICATION:
  • Certification as a Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) by the National Cancer Registrar Association

EXPERIENCE:
  • 0 - 5 years CTR/ODS credentialed
  • Would be beneficial to have experience working with an accredited cancer program.
  • Telework experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Willingness to learn hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Skill and proficiency in the principles of AJCC staging, ACS guidelines for an approved COC program and any other Tumor Registry functions.
  • Skill and proficiency in verbal and written communication, mathematical calculation and other clerical skills, and willingness to present data results and information to medical staff at committee meetings.
  • Extensive knowledge of anatomy and specific disease process
  • Computer skills for accurate data entry, and basic software applications for documentation and graphic skills to demonstrate statistical results and data collection.
  • Knowledge of cancer treatment modalities and rationales including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, symptom management, and survivor care
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, think independently, take initiative, meet deadlines
