What does a data engineering intern do?

A Data Engineering Intern assists in building and maintaining the systems and infrastructure that allow organizations to collect, store, and analyze large volumes of data. Their responsibilities often include cleaning and organizing raw data, developing data pipelines, and supporting the work of data engineers and data scientists. Interns may also work with tools like SQL, Python, and cloud platforms to automate data workflows. This role provides hands-on experience in managing data processes and understanding the fundamentals of data engineering in a real-world environment.

What types of projects and technologies can a data engineering intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a Data Engineering Intern, you’ll typically work on projects involving data pipeline development, data cleaning, and integration of data from various sources. You can expect to use technologies like SQL, Python, and tools such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud. Interns often collaborate closely with data engineers, analysts, and sometimes data scientists to ensure data is accessible, reliable, and well-organized for analysis. This hands-on experience helps you build foundational skills and understand real-world data workflows within a collaborative team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineering Intern, you need foundational knowledge in programming (especially Python or Java), databases, and data structures, often obtained through coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with SQL, cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), and data pipeline tools such as Apache Spark or Airflow is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently handling data workflows, collaborating with teams, and contributing to high-quality data solutions.

Job description

About Flywheel Energy

Flywheel Energy is a private exploration and production company on a mission to achieve rapid, responsible growth—building momentum where it matters. We provide reliable, affordable energy that powers the essentials of everyday life: food, water, shelter, and healthcare. Our company is built intentionally—on exceptional people, high-performing teams, and a culture centered on excellence and ownership.

Who We Hire

We are ridiculously selective because every new hire—interns included—should make us better. Our vision is simple: high-performing, self-directed teams made up of 100% awesome teammates. We look for people who are motivated to maximize their contribution and who elevate everyone around them. Successful Flywheel interns are:

  • Hungry – self-motivated; they embrace hard work and see challenges as a chance to learn, grow, and contribute
  • Humble – they use "we" instead of "I" and sincerely appreciate the strengths of those around them
  • People smart – strong communicators who listen well and make their teammates better
Our Culture

Excellence at Flywheel is both earned and enabled. You'll be surrounded by people who operate at a high level and expect the same from those around them. Our culture is defined by:

  • Personal ownership of outcomes—we act like owners, not bystanders
  • Front-line innovation—the people closest to the work make better decisions faster
  • Accountability, clarity, and honest feedback—we actively debate, commit, and hold each other accountable
  • A growth mindset—we know there are always two ways to do things: the current way, and a better way

When everyone is clear on the mission and trusted to execute, extraordinary results follow.

About the Data Engineering Internship

As a Data Engineering Intern at Flywheel Energy, you will help build and maintain the data platform that powers decision-making across the company. You will work with real production, operational, and financial data—moving it, modeling it, and making it trustworthy and accessible for the teams who depend on it.

You will work alongside high-performing teams, gaining hands-on experience and real accountability from day one.

What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain data pipelines that consolidate field, production, land, and financial data into our cloud data platform
  • Develop and optimize ETL/ELT workflows and orchestrate pipelines across Databricks or Snowflake platforms
  • Design data models and curated datasets that feed Power BI reports and dashboards used across the company
  • Implement data quality checks, validation, and monitoring to keep critical datasets accurate and reliable
  • Document pipelines, data definitions, and processes so others can build on your work
  • Collaborate with analysts, engineers, and business users to translate reporting needs into durable data solutions
What You'll Gain
  • Real project ownership and accountability from day one
  • Immersion in a high-performance, purpose-driven culture
  • Access to experienced mentors who value curiosity and continuous improvement
  • Opportunities to contribute ideas, challenge the status quo, and drive real impact
  • A collaborative environment where your voice matters and your work is visible
Who Should Apply

This internship is ideal for students who:

  • Are currently pursuing degrees in computer science, data science, management information systems, engineering, or other applicable majors and have graduation dates of December 2027 or later
  • Bring a growth mindset and thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments
  • Embrace challenge, accountability, and honest feedback
  • Want to grow alongside exceptional teammates and contribute to something bigger than themselves
  • Have hands-on experience with SQL and Python and familiarity with cloud data platforms, data modeling, or BI tools
  • Care about data quality and enjoy building things that make other people's work easier
