Data Engineering Fellow information

What types of projects and technologies can a Data Engineering Fellow expect to work with during their fellowship?

As a Data Engineering Fellow, you can expect to work on real-world projects involving data pipelines, data warehousing, and ETL processes using technologies such as Python, SQL, Apache Spark, and cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud. Fellows often collaborate closely with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers to design, build, and optimize systems for data collection and analysis. The role provides hands-on experience with large datasets and modern data infrastructure, offering a strong foundation for a career in data engineering or related fields. This collaborative environment helps fellows quickly develop both technical skills and an understanding of cross-functional teamwork.

What is a Data Engineering Fellow?

A Data Engineering Fellow is typically a participant in a specialized training program or fellowship focused on developing advanced skills in data engineering. Fellows learn to design, build, and maintain the infrastructure and tools needed for collecting, storing, and analyzing large volumes of data. These programs often combine hands-on projects, mentorship, and coursework to prepare individuals for professional data engineering roles. The fellowship may target recent graduates or career changers looking to enter the field of data engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineering Fellow, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineering Fellow, you need strong programming skills (particularly in Python or Java), a solid grasp of data structures, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data pipelines, ETL tools, cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), and SQL/NoSQL databases is typically required, along with certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer being advantageous. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that help you collaborate and translate technical concepts. These skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable data solutions, ensuring data quality, and contributing effectively within dynamic data teams.

Job description

The Engineer Fellow โ€“ Data Center Engineering supports the design, analysis, and delivery of mission-critical infrastructure systems across the companyโ€™s data center portfolio. This position plays a key role in developing reliable, efficient, and scalable solutions spanning power, cooling, and distribution systems that enable long-term growth and operational excellence.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with data center or other critical facilities, strong technical fundamentals in either mechanical or electrical engineering, and the ability to collaborate effectively across design, construction, and operations teams. A Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is preferred.

This position is based in Dallas, TX, with a hybrid expectation of four days per week in the office.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Technical Execution

  • Develop, review, and coordinate detailed designs for power, cooling, and infrastructure systems, including electrical distribution (UPS, switchgear, PDUs) and mechanical systems (chilled water, economization, liquid cooling).
  • Ensure system designs meet company standards for efficiency, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical evaluations for new builds, retrofits, and expansions.
  • Support load calculations, one-line diagrams, airflow and energy models, and performance validation.

Project Coordination & Delivery

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, consultants, and contractors through design, procurement, and commissioning.
  • Evaluate constructability and sequencing to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, and field installations to ensure compliance with design intent.

System Optimization & Analysis

  • Perform root-cause and trend analysis on system performance to drive continuous improvement.
  • Identify efficiency opportunities across power and cooling systems to reduce PUE and lifecycle cost.
  • Support standardization of engineering templates, specifications, and quality-assurance processes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Construction, Operations, Controls, and Capacity Planning teams to ensure seamless handoffs from design through operations.
  • Communicate complex technical topics clearly to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and interns.

Required Skills & Experience

Education

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred.

Experience

  • 6โ€“10 years of engineering experience in data centers, mission-critical facilities, or related infrastructure environments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in design fundamentals for power and/or mechanical systems, including redundancy (N+1, 2N) and reliability principles.
  • Familiarity with key codes and standards (ASHRAE, NFPA 70E, NEC, IEEE, local building/mechanical codes).
  • Experience with design and modeling tools (AutoCAD, Revit, CFD, or electrical load modeling software).

Skills

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Financial and technical acumen to balance performance, cost, and maintainability.
  • Effective communicator capable of leading technical discussions and resolving design challenges.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
