Data Engineer Remote Contract information

What is a data engineer remote contract?

A Data Engineer Remote Contract position involves building and maintaining the infrastructure and systems that enable organizations to collect, store, and analyze large amounts of data, all while working remotely. As a contractor, you are typically hired for a specific project or period and are not a permanent employee. This role often includes tasks like designing data pipelines, optimizing database performance, ensuring data quality, and collaborating with data scientists and analysts. Working remotely provides flexibility in location, but contractors are expected to communicate regularly with teams and meet project deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer in a remote contract role?

To thrive as a Data Engineer in a remote contract position, you need strong programming skills (such as Python or Java), deep knowledge of database systems, and a background in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with data pipeline tools (like Apache Airflow), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and ETL processes, along with relevant certifications, is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and self-motivation are key soft skills, especially when working independently or with distributed teams. These skills ensure the reliable design, development, and maintenance of scalable data systems, which are critical for organizations to leverage data effectively.

What are some common challenges faced by data engineers working remotely on contract assignments?

Data Engineers working remotely on contract assignments often navigate challenges such as aligning with distributed teams across different time zones, ensuring secure access to sensitive data, and maintaining clear communication with stakeholders. Since contractors may work with diverse tech stacks across projects, adapting quickly to new tools and company-specific data infrastructures is essential. Additionally, balancing multiple deliverables and onboarding efficiently without in-person support requires strong self-management and proactive collaboration skills.

Job description

WHY DEPT?

We are pioneers at heart. What this means, is that we are always leaning forward, thinking of what we can create tomorrow that does not exist today. We were born digital and we are a new model of agency, with a deep skillset in tech and marketing. That's why we hire curious, self-driven, talented people who never stop innovating.

Our culture is big enough to cope and small enough to care. Meaning, that with people across 20+ countries, we're big enough to provide you with the best tools, global opportunities, and benefits that help you thrive. While acting small by investing in you, your growth, your team, and giving you the autonomy to solve our clients' problems, no matter where you are in the world.ย

This is a 3 month fixed term salaried contract, located in Ontario Canada. Preferably in Toronto.

The Role:

The Senior Data Engineer will be a core technical contributor on the evaluation team within one of our most relevant clients in AMER. Will be responsible for determining whether an enterprise-scale knowledge graph requires a purpose-built graph database or whether PostgreSQL can carry the load. The work is hands-on and benchmark-driven - measured results, not opinions.

What You'll Do:

  • Pull data from Databricks, transform it, and load it into multiple graph database candidates - then tear them down and do it again under controlled, repeatable conditions
  • Build and manage relationship structures and entity linkages within each graph database to mirror real production data models
  • Implement benchmark queries in each technology's native language (Cypher, GSQL, nGQL, AQL, openCypher) and as PostgreSQL recursive CTEs for the baseline
  • Build APIs against each candidate to evaluate real-world query performance across use cases
  • Contribute scored candidate evaluations and written analysis to a final technology recommendation presented to engineering and architecture leadership

What You Bring:

  • Databricks fluencyย
  • Hands-on experience with at least two graph databases - Neo4j and/or TigerGraph strongly preferred - and working proficiency in Cypher at minimum
  • Strong PostgreSQL skills: recursive CTEs, materialized views, query plan analysis, index strategy
  • Comfort spinning up and tearing down database environments repeatedly in a structured evaluation context
  • Experience designing and executing structured technology benchmarks at enterprise scale
  • Bonus: KYC/AML domain knowledge, Kubernetes for database workloads, or AWS-native database deployment

The anticipated hourly range for this position is $90 hourly. Rate is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, expertise, and organizational impact. This is based on a 40-hour workweek and leveling. Keep in mind, we're flexible.ย
