Data Engineer Project information

What is a data engineer project?

A Data Engineer Project refers to a specific initiative or assignment undertaken by data engineers to design, build, and maintain systems that gather, process, and store large volumes of data. These projects often involve creating data pipelines, integrating multiple data sources, ensuring data quality, and optimizing storage solutions for analytics or business intelligence. Such projects are critical for organizations to manage their data efficiently and enable data-driven decision-making. Data Engineer Projects can range from building a data warehouse to implementing real-time data streaming solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by data engineers working on project-based teams?

Data Engineers on project-based teams often encounter challenges such as integrating data from disparate sources, ensuring data quality and consistency, and meeting tight project deadlines. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers is crucial, requiring clear communication to translate business needs into robust data pipelines. Additionally, adapting to evolving technologies and toolsets is essential for the successful delivery of scalable and maintainable solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need strong proficiency in programming (Python, Java, or Scala), data modeling, and database management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data tools (like Hadoop, Spark), ETL systems, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and relevant certifications is highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with data teams and stakeholders. These competencies are essential for building reliable data pipelines and ensuring data availability and quality to drive business insights.

What is the difference between Data Engineer Project vs Data Engineer?

AspectData Engineer ProjectData Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related fields; certifications like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure are commonSimilar credentials; often holds certifications in cloud platforms and data tools
Work EnvironmentProject-based, often temporary teams working on specific data solutionsFull-time role within organizations, maintaining ongoing data pipelines and infrastructure
Industry UsageUsed across industries for specific data initiativesCore role in data-driven companies and departments
Search & Comparison IntentOften searched for project-based roles or freelance opportunitiesMore common in job searches for permanent positions

In summary, Data Engineer Projects focus on temporary, goal-specific data tasks, while Data Engineers hold ongoing roles responsible for maintaining data infrastructure. Both roles require similar skills and certifications but differ mainly in scope and employment type.

Are data engineers still in high demand?

Data engineers are currently in high demand due to the increasing reliance on data-driven decision making and the growth of big data technologies. Skills in cloud platforms, data pipeline development, and tools like SQL, Python, and Apache Spark enhance job prospects in this field.

Is a data engineer paid well?

Data engineers are generally well-compensated due to their specialized skills in managing large datasets, working with tools like SQL, Python, and cloud platforms. Salaries vary by experience, location, and industry, but they tend to be higher than average for tech roles, reflecting the demand for data infrastructure expertise.

  • Assess, audit, and provide recommendations to help customers move toward a modern Data & Analytics platform.

  • Work with stakeholders to identify opportunities for leveraging data to produce insights, improve processes, or enable innovation.

Job description

The Data & Analytics group is looking for a Data Architect with, BI and AI expertise who will be providing consulting services to our customers.

The candidate

  • Is a senior Data architect that can develop detailed and comprehensive conceptual data model
  • Is at ease defining business processes map, SIPOC, and business capabilities models
  • Can put a governance program in place with appropriate structure, committees and supporting processes and tools. And can define policies and enforce them for the full life cycle of data
  • Is a senior BI architect that can transpose the conceptual data model in dimensional models an ideally can go further by taking the dimensional models and physicalizing them on traditional and modern D&A platform.
  • The BI architect is also expected to create the dimensional metadata layer to be consumed by visualization software and/or thru API
  • Master one or more Cloud environments and has been involved in AI projects

Requirements

  • Has defined either 'home grown' DG solution or use tools such as Collibra, Cloudera EDH, Watson Knowledge Catalog or others
  • Must have a great experience in creating conceptual data models from scratch and have them physically implemented. This clearly is not only the ability to identify and define the right concepts but also the ability to have the concepts physically implemented and used in applications and dashboards
  • Can translate and animate sessions with businesspeople and other SMEs to either complete a started model or do one from scratch
  • Has done multiple snowflake and STAR model from a conceptual data model and/or directly
  • Has used and created multiple data layers including the use of metadata for exposing datamarts to visualisation tools
  • Can define the access rights management solution
  • Has implemented various regulations such as PIPED Act, GDPR, IFRS, SOX or others
  • Has used multiple Data Modeling tools and Enterprise Architecture tools (PowerDesigner, ErWin, Embarcadero, Sparx, CaseWise, BizzDesign, Aris, Alfabet AEM, Unicom System Architect, Orbus I-Server, etc.)
  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams
  • Is driven to learn and master new technologies and techniques
  • Can understand rapidly the patterns and directions taken by the Practice Lead (former chief architect)
  • Can zero-in on ambiguous concepts and made them crystal clear rapidly
  • Is pragmatic (consider constraints) but not to the expense of faulty designs/concepts
  • Can discern fundamental and key aspects worth 'fighting for' versus the less 'important' ones
  • Is great at whiteboarding with customers and prospects. Excellent understanding of SQL (DDL and DML)
  • Understands asynchronous architecture using 'queue mechanisms' such as Event Hub/Kakfa
  • Has implemented the Data aspect related to COBIT
  • Is bilingual (French and English) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Work with our customers' stakeholders to identify opportunities for leveraging their data to produce insights allowing them to improve business processes or even innovate by changing the industry. The same assessment could also be used to identify constraints allowing to optimize (DO) business processes
  • Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques
  • Assess, audit, and provide recommendations to help our customers move toward a modern D&A platform allowing them to scale their AI
  • Ensure that all models (conceptual to physical) are complete, coherent, and consistent
  • Help the data engineers from getting the data to the transformation toward the DataLake
  • Help the BA to have business requirements align with the data architecture and vice-versa. Data architects create generic to specific data concepts and they need to tie back to the business requirements. On the other hand, many times business requirements describe the how versus the what which is a constraint in itself
  • Assist sales efforts as SME from the D&A practice by meeting prospects and customers presenting the D&A offerings from KPI Digitals and participating in SOW
  • Handle and complete the deliverables started by the VP of D&A practice for internal and external projects
  • Guide and direct teams from architectural and governance perspective

What will make you successful here?

  • A desire to be accountable for owning problems from design to implementation
  • An understanding of the difference between data and useful insights
  • A bias for action and pragmatic solutions
  • A low ego and humility; an ability to gain trust through effective communication and doing what you say you will do
  • A talent for operating effectively at various levels of abstraction
  • An aptness to distill complex, technical topics articulately to a non-technical audience
  • Adaptability, flexibility and an ability to navigate ambiguity
