Job description


Position Summary
The Data Analytics Analyst I the development and maintenance of reports, dashboards, and data analyses that help inform decision-making across Ithaca College. Working under the guidance of senior analysts, this entry-level position collaborates with other analysts and college stakeholders to deliver accurate, meaningful data and continuously develops proficiency in analytic tools, methodologies, and AI technologies. The position supports the college's human-centered approach to AI by using technology to enhance analysis while ensuring that human judgment guides all decisions. This role also contributes to Data Governance and Data Literacy initiatives.
Supervision
This position reports to the Director of Analytics and Special IT Projects.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Data analysis and reporting
  • Develop and maintain reports and dashboards under the guidance of senior analysts to provide accurate, meaningful, and actionable information.
  • Analyze and interpret data to support decision-making across the institution.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation for data models, reports, dashboards, and analytics processes to support consistency and knowledge sharing.

Stakeholder collaboration and support
  • Collaborate with analysts and campus stakeholders to understand data, reporting, and business needs and support the development of effective analytics solutions.
  • Support data literacy initiatives by helping stakeholders understand and effectively use data, reports, and analytics across the institution.

Analytics tools and technical development
  • Develop proficiency in data analytics tools and methodologies and apply them to support reporting and analysis activities.
  • Develop familiarity with the college's Data Lakehouse environment and assist with support tasks as needed.
  • Provide support for data modeling efforts as needed; primary responsibility for data modeling rests with other roles on the team.

AI integration
  • Apply AI tools effectively and responsibly across all aspects of the role, including data analysis, report development, documentation, and testing consistent with the college's human-centered approach to AI.
  • Engage with emerging AI technologies, especially in relation to the use of college data, and stay current with developments in generative and machine learning.
  • Support AI-related activities including prompt design, data gathering, and testing.

Data governance
  • Participate in data governance efforts by following data standards, policies, and regulations.
  • Support efforts to promote consistent, accurate, and responsible use of institutional data.

Qualifications
The Data Analytics Analyst I at Ithaca College is an entry-level position. Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree in business, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field, and should be able to demonstrate the following:
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Experience with data analysis through coursework, academic projects, internships or professional experience.
  • Foundational understanding of statistics and quantitative reasoning
  • Working knowledge of Excel or a similar tool, including formulas and basic data organization.
  • Interest in and willingness to learn and apply AI tools responsibly and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to learn and apply data analytics tools and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated analytical curiosity, with the ability to investigate data, identify patterns and trends, solve problems, and adapt to new technologies and analytical methods.

Preferred:
  • Experience writing basic SQL queries to retrieve and prepare data.
  • Exposure to Python, R, or a similar programming languages.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Experience using generative AI tools through coursework, projects, or work experience.

Work Environment
This position works primarily in an office environment with regular use of computers, technology systems, and standard office equipment. The role requires the ability to communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and perform work using digital tools and systems.
