What are some common challenges Data Engineers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data formats, varying data quality, and differing update frequencies when integrating data from multiple sources. Ensuring data integrity and designing robust ETL pipelines that can handle these discrepancies is a key part of the role. Collaboration with data analysts, database administrators, and source system owners is crucial to resolve data mapping issues, automate data validation, and maintain reliable data flows within the organization.

What is the difference between Data Engineer Data vs Data Analyst?

AspectData Engineer DataData Analyst

While Data Engineer Data focuses on creating and managing data infrastructure, Data Analysts interpret this data to support decision-making. Both roles require strong SQL skills, but Data Engineers typically work more with data pipelines and cloud platforms, whereas Data Analysts focus on data visualization and reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a solid understanding of data modeling, SQL, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often backed by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with data warehousing solutions (like Amazon Redshift or Snowflake), ETL tools, and cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and clear communication are vital soft skills for integrating complex data systems and working with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that data pipelines are reliable, scalable, and effectively support business intelligence and analytics needs.

What are Data Engineers?

Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain the systems and infrastructure that allow organizations to collect, store, and analyze large amounts of data. They create data pipelines, ensure data quality, and optimize data flow between systems, making it accessible for data scientists and analysts. Data Engineers often work with technologies like SQL, Python, Hadoop, and cloud platforms, and play a crucial role in supporting data-driven decision-making within organizations.

Job description

Join a team that's transforming mental healthcare. Founded by psychiatrists, Headlight is more than a company: it's a movement. A movement that exists on the front lines of the mental health crisis, transforming the way people access care and the way clinicians deliver it. In order to help people in their time of need and ensure that every person who comes to us has options, we are transparent about our capabilities, treatments, and coverage, we champion innovation, and we leverage our rich data to continuously implement better ways of delivering care. Our mission is simple but powerful: Improving lives, one session at a time.

Our highly skilled and principled clinical team enjoys autonomy and institutional support so they can put their focus where it should be: on improving patient outcomes. Our clinicians want to do more than help individual clients, so they work to affect the system as a whole, elevating standards of care so that their efforts reverberate far beyond what they could do in private practice.

As the most trusted behavioral health partner in the Western U.S., we've established deep relationships that give us unparalleled access, interoperability, and first-priority referrals. This exclusivity, combined with our best-in-class coordinated care and feedback loops, results in superior outcomes and cost savings.

Our services are convenient, accessible, and expert, combining personalized client engagement with advanced technology to enhance, not replace, human connection. Indeed, we hold that human-to-human relationships are indispensable, so from the match to the session to the time between sessions, we provide whole person care so nobody falls through the cracks and there is a brighter path forward for all.
Our Pillars
  • Make things easier.
  • Forge genuine connections.
  • Elevate the standard.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Own and extend the Python-based ETL job orchestration engine: add new job types, monitor execution, and resolve production failures

  • Build and maintain data pipelines powering operational reporting for scheduling, finance, credentialing, and clinical operations

  • Integrate data sources into the warehouse - EHR (NextGen), CRM (HubSpot), HR platforms (ADP, Lever), credentialing (Modio), call center (Five9), and other third-party APIs

  • Optimize high-frequency SQL workloads

  • Support and extend custom AI agents

  • Maintain HIPAA compliance across all data handling: enforce access controls, audit logging, and PHI segregation in pipelines and reporting layers

  • Write and maintain version-controlled code in the GitHub repository

Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of data engineering experience in a production environment

  • Strong SQL skills: complex stored procedures, CTEs, window functions, temp tables, index optimization, execution plan analysis

  • Python proficiency for ETL workloads: pandas, pyodbc or SQLAlchemy, REST API consumption, file handling, scheduling

  • Hands-on experience data warehouse/ETL workloads

  • Experience building and maintaining scheduled data pipelines with robust error handling, retry logic, and logging

  • Ability to debug production failures independently, communicate status clearly, and resolve issues quickly under pressure

  • Comfort working in a HIPAA-regulated environment and handling PHI with appropriate care and controls

  • Familiarity with Azure Blob Storage or equivalent object storage for ETL staging workflows

Preferred Qualifications
  • HubSpot CRM data integration experience (Contacts, Deals, Tickets, Company hierarchy, API rate limit handling)

  • Healthcare data experience: EHR integrations (NextGen, Epic, or Cerner), credentialing systems, claims data, HIPAA BAA contexts

  • Experience building or maintaining AI/LLM-powered applications (Claude, OpenAI) in a production context

  • Familiarity with voice or telephony data pipelines, conversational AI systems, or patient intake automation

  • Experience with complex provider or resource scheduling systems and the data modeling they require

  • Exposure to CAC, LTV, or patient funnel analytics in a B2C healthcare or SaaS context

  • Strong communication skills - this team works directly with clinical ops, finance, and marketing stakeholders

Benefits
  • W2 role with competitive compensation

  • Medical, Dental and Vision on the first of the month after employment

  • Paid Vacation, Sick, and Holiday time

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides confidential counseling services, resources, and support to help you navigate personal or professional challenges.

  • 401(k) plan with company contribution

  • Opportunity to work in a cutting-edge healthcare technology environment

  • Professional development opportunities and training

  • Collaborative and supportive work culture

  • Impactful role contributing to the enhancement of patient care and healthcare processes
