What does a Data Engineer BI Developer do?

A Data Engineer BI (Business Intelligence) Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the systems and processes that collect, store, and analyze data for business intelligence purposes. They work with large datasets, create data pipelines, and ensure data is accurate, accessible, and well-organized for reporting and analysis. This role often involves developing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, integrating data from multiple sources, and creating dashboards or reports to help organizations make data-driven decisions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineer BI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer BI Developer, you need strong skills in database management, data modeling, ETL processes, and a background in computer science or information technology. Proficiency with tools and platforms such as SQL, Python, Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, and cloud data services is typically required, along with relevant certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills to translate complex data into actionable business insights. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring accurate data integration, efficient reporting, and supporting informed decision-making within organizations.

How does a Data Engineer BI Developer typically collaborate with data analysts and business stakeholders?

A Data Engineer BI Developer works closely with data analysts and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into robust BI solutions. This often involves gathering user needs, designing and building ETL pipelines, and creating data models or dashboards that support insightful decision-making. Regular communication and feedback sessions help ensure that the delivered solutions align with business objectives and allow for quick adjustments as requirements evolve. Effective collaboration is key to delivering accurate, accessible, and actionable data insights across the organization.

Job description

Description
Xcelerate Solutions seeks a Data Engineer / BI Developer to play a key role in designing, building, maintaining, and optimizing robust data architectures and business intelligence systems. Operating under established technical performance standards, the successful candidate will bridge the gap between complex raw backend data systems and intuitive, actionable frontend business intelligence interfaces.
This position requires a strong technical background in data pipeline (ETL/ELT) development, data warehousing, and modern BI visualization platforms. Working in an Agile environment, the candidate will collaborate with software developers, database administrators, and business analysts to deliver scalable, secure, and compliant data products that drive strategic decision-making. Come join our award-winning organization and work with some of the most talented and brightest minds in the GovCon industry.
Location: Remote
Key Responsibilities
In accordance with established technical guidelines and data management objectives, the Data Engineer / BI Developer will perform the following duties:
1. Data Pipeline & ETL/ELT Development
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable data pipelines to ingest, transform, and load structured and unstructured data from disparate enterprise sources.
  • Develop clean, optimized SQL scripts, stored procedures, and ETL workflows to support data migration and synchronization.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and tune data integration processes to ensure maximum pipeline efficiency, data freshness, and minimal system latency.
2. Data Warehousing & Architecture
  • Participate in formal Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) to evaluate and determine optimal enterprise Business Intelligence (BI) Architecture Solutions, analyzing key factors such as platform scalability, data ingestion performance, system integration, licensing, and data governance capabilities.
  • Assist in designing and maintaining robust data warehouse schemas, data marts, and dimensional models (Star/Snowflake schemas) to optimize analytical queries.
  • Collaborate with database administrators to ensure data integrity, database performance tuning, indexing, and partitioning strategies are aligned with reporting needs.
3. Business Intelligence & Reporting Visualization
  • Develop, publish, and maintain interactive, high-performance dashboards and paginated reports using enterprise BI tools (such as Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik).
  • Translate complex business requirements into intuitive, user-friendly data visualizations that clearly communicate trends, KPIs, and anomalies.
  • Create and maintain complex data models within BI tools, utilizing advanced calculation languages (such as DAX or MDX) to perform advanced calculations and time-series analyses.
4. Data Quality, Security & Compliance
  • Implement rigorous automated data validation and quality check procedures within the data pipelines to identify, log, and resolve data anomalies.
  • Ensure all developed dashboards, reports, and underlying data sources strictly comply with Section 508 accessibility standards and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Align all data warehousing and reporting solutions with enterprise security protocols, ensuring proper row-level security (RLS), data masking, and access controls are implemented.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field (equivalent professional experience may be considered).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in data engineering, BI development, or database development roles.
    • 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines and dimensional data models.
    • 3+ years of experience developing enterprise-grade dashboards and reports using tools like Power BI or Tableau.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expert-level proficiency in SQL, including writing, optimizing, and debugging complex queries, views, and stored procedures.
    • Strong programming skills in languages commonly used in data pipelines (e.g., Python, Scala, or C#).
    • In-depth understanding of data warehousing concepts, ETL methodologies, and data architecture patterns.
    • Solid understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
    • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex data concepts to non-technical business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (such as Azure Synapse, Snowflake, AWS Redshift, or Databricks).
  • Familiarity with modern data orchestration tools (such as Apache Airflow, Azure Data Factory, or dbt).
  • Experience implementing Row-Level Security (RLS) and managing workspace permissions within enterprise BI environments.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical analysis, predictive modeling, or machine learning integration with BI tools.
  • Practical experience performing Section 508 accessibility compliance testing on BI reporting outputs.
Certifications
