What is a data designer?

Data Designers are professionals who specialize in structuring, visualizing, and presenting data in ways that make it easier to understand and use. They combine technical skills in data modeling and management with creative abilities in data visualization to help organizations make informed decisions. Data Designers often work closely with data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders to ensure that data is both accurate and accessible. Their work can include creating dashboards, designing data flows, and developing interactive reports.

How does a data designer typically collaborate with data engineers and business analysts during a project?

Data Designers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between technical and business teams. They often work closely with data engineers to ensure that data models are both technically feasible and scalable, while also collaborating with business analysts to translate business requirements into effective data structures. This collaborative process involves frequent meetings to review data flows, refine data schemas, and ensure alignment on project goals. By maintaining open communication, Data Designers help create data solutions that are robust, user-friendly, and support informed business decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Designer, you need a solid background in data modeling, database design, and information architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as SQL, ER/Studio, Tableau, and data visualization platforms, along with knowledge of data governance frameworks, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help bridge technical requirements with business needs. These qualifications are crucial for creating scalable, efficient data structures that drive informed decision-making and organizational success.

Job description

7AI is building the Operating System for the SOC โ€” an Agentic Security Platform where AI agents investigate and triage security alerts, so security teams get their time back for the work that needs a person. We're growing our in-house design team and looking for a Senior Visual Designer to join our team of designers and lead the visual side of the product. Our team is strong on UX โ€” we know how the product should work. This role is about how it looks, feels, and communicates: typography, color, layout, iconography, data visualization, and the visual system that ties it all together. You'll own that layer and raise the bar on craft across the team. What You'll Do (Carolyn Rev) Own and evolve the visual language of 7AI's Agentic Security Platform with an eye for clean, legible interfaces on technical, data-heavy surfaces Think in systems: collaborate with the team to develop high fidelity patterns that act as building blocks across our platform, from dashboards to data-dense workflows Turn UX flows and low-fidelity concepts into polished, production-ready, and reusable components, and produce the assets and specs that support pixel-perfect implementation Partner closely with Product and Engineering to build interfaces with real visual fidelity Drive rigor and consistency across our design system โ€” auditing, documenting, and pushing the team's contributions toward one visual standard Raise the bar on craft and attention to detail across the design team, and give feedback that helps the rest of the team grow their visual skills What We're Looking For 6+ years of experience in visual design, UI design, or product design with a strong visual focus A portfolio that shows real depth in typography, layout, color, hierarchy, and data visualization โ€” not just interaction design Experience designing for complex, data-rich products Experience building or leading contributions to a design system, with a visual focus High proficiency in Figma A sharp eye for detail โ€” spacing, alignment, and polish matter to you Comfort giving direction and feedback to other designers on visual craft Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-ownership startup environment Nice to Have Experience designing for security, infrastructure, or other technical B2B products Familiarity with AI-assisted design tooling as part of your regular workflow #J-18808-Ljbffr
