Medium Voltage Cable Installer / Terminator
The Medium Voltage (MV) Cable Installer / Terminator is responsible for the safe installation, preparation, termination, splicing, and testing of medium-voltage power cable systems on data center, BESS, substation, utility, and other critical electrical infrastructure projects.
This position requires hands-on experience working with medium-voltage cable systems, typically ranging from 5kV through 35kV, and a strong understanding of cable preparation, insulation systems, stress control, grounding, shielding, terminations, and manufacturer installation requirements.
What You'll Do
โ€ข Install medium-voltage cable in underground conduit, duct banks, cable tray, equipment, switchgear, transformers, PCS equipment, and other electrical systems.
โ€ข Perform cable pulling, handling, routing, dressing, supporting, and securing of MV conductors.
โ€ข Prepare and terminate medium-voltage cables ranging from 5kV to 35kV.
โ€ข Install MV termination systems including:
o Cold-shrink terminations
o Heat-shrink terminations
o Stress cones
o Dead-break elbows
o Load-break elbows, where applicable
o Separable connectors and T-body connectors
o Outdoor and indoor termination kits
โ€ข Perform MV cable splicing when required by project scope and technician qualifications.
โ€ข Properly remove cable jackets, insulation shields, semiconductive layers, insulation, and conductor shielding without damaging the cable system.
โ€ข Install grounding braids, shield grounding components, concentric neutrals, grounding adapters, and associated hardware.
โ€ข Install compression lugs and connectors utilizing manufacturer-approved tooling and dies.
โ€ข Verify proper crimping sequence, number of crimps, connector orientation, and cable preparation dimensions.
โ€ข Follow manufacturer-specific installation instructions for all termination and splice kits.
โ€ข Maintain required minimum bending radius and pulling tension requirements during cable installation.
โ€ข Inspect cable before and after pulling for damage to jackets, shielding, or insulation.
โ€ข Perform cable identification, phase identification, labeling, and equipment termination verification.
โ€ข Assist with or perform cable testing activities including continuity, insulation resistance, VLF, and other required acceptance testing as permitted by project requirements and technician qualifications.
โ€ข Coordinate completed installations with QA/QC personnel for inspection and documentation.
โ€ข Complete termination checklists, cable logs, torque records, and other required quality documentation.
โ€ข Maintain cleanliness and environmental controls during cable preparation and termination activities.
โ€ข Identify installation deficiencies or damaged cable and immediately communicate concerns to project supervision.
โ€ข Maintain tools, cable preparation equipment, crimpers, torque tools, and specialty MV equipment in proper working condition.
โ€ข Follow project-specific electrical safety requirements, LOTO procedures, NFPA 70E requirements, and company safety policies.
What You'll Bring
โ€ข Minimum 3-5 years of electrical construction experience, with demonstrated experience installing and terminating medium-voltage cable.
โ€ข Hands-on experience with 5kV, 15kV, 25kV, and/or 35kV cable systems preferred.
โ€ข Experience installing stress-control and termination systems.
โ€ข Ability to properly use cable preparation tools, stripping tools, penciling tools, insulation preparation equipment, hydraulic crimpers, and torque tools.
โ€ข Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
โ€ข Ability to work safely around medium-voltage electrical equipment and systems.
