What is a Data BI engineer?

Data BI (Business Intelligence) Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain systems that transform raw data into meaningful business insights. They develop data pipelines, integrate various data sources, and create reports or dashboards to support decision-making processes. Their work ensures that companies have accurate, timely, and actionable information to drive strategy and operations. Data BI Engineers typically work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data BI engineer?

To thrive as a Data BI Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, SQL, ETL processes, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker, as well as experience with data warehouses and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating data insights into actionable business recommendations. Job Description

We are seeking a Senior BI Developer to design, build, and own BI and reporting solutions for our fast-paced multi-tenant Life Science Data Management Platform. Our BI ecosystem is primarily built on TIBCO Spotfire, with Power BI used for selected reporting and analytics use cases. We are looking for a developer with deep Spotfire expertise who is also willing and able to work across Power BI and other visualization platforms as business needs evolve. This role requires strong ownership, sound technical judgment, and the ability to operate with minimal oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards, visualizations, analyses, and reporting solutions in TIBCO Spotfire.

  • Own end-to-end delivery of BI solutions: requirements, data modeling, calculations, and report/dashboard development.

  • Shape design approach and architecture for data models and calculations, setting patterns other developers can build on.

  • Oversee version control and deployment processes via GitHub, including code review and approval for team members' contributions.

  • Partner with data engineers, architects, and product teams to resolve data and quality issues proactively.

  • Identify and escalate risks or inefficiencies early.

  • Mentor team members and guide their design decisions.

  • Define and drive adoption of BI standards and best practices.

  • Operate independently, exercising judgment on trade-offs without requiring sign-off.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of BI development experience, including significant hands-on experience designing and developing dashboards, visualizations, analyses, and reporting solutions in TIBCO Spotfire.

  • Experience with Power BI and willingness to work across multiple BI and visualization platforms as business needs evolve.
  • Strong data modeling skills (star schema, relationships, performance tuning at scale).

  • Familiarity with multi-tenant data architecture and Row-Level Security (RLS).

  • Practical GitHub experience in a team deployment workflow.

  • Proven ability to own deliverables independently.

  • Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proactive and detail-oriented, with consistent follow-through.

  • Comfortable in a high-pace, evolving environment.

  • Adaptable across BI/visualization platforms.
