What is a Data BI engineer?

Data BI (Business Intelligence) Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain systems that transform raw data into meaningful business insights. They develop data pipelines, integrate various data sources, and create reports or dashboards to support decision-making processes. Their work ensures that companies have accurate, timely, and actionable information to drive strategy and operations. Data BI Engineers typically work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data BI engineer?

To thrive as a Data BI Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, SQL, ETL processes, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker, as well as experience with data warehouses and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating data insights into actionable business recommendations. This role bridges the technical and business sides of analytics - partnering directly with business units to define requirements and translate them into trusted, actionable data products.
The ideal candidate brings strong Power BI development fundamentals (DAX, Power Query, semantic modeling), working familiarity with Snowflake, and the interpersonal skills to act as a data evangelist across the organization. This is a hands-on, high-visibility role on a small team building a modern data platform, where the right person will have meaningful impact from day one. This role will focus on development responsibilities ~85%-90% of the day.

  • Design, build, and maintain semantic models, reports, dashboards, and dataflows that meet enterprise standards for performance, accuracy, and maintainability.
  • Support user enablement including; training, documentation, and coaching business users on effective self-service consumption.
  • Own Power BI ecosystem observability; monitoring tenant usage, activity logs, and workspace metadata via the Power BI REST API and admin APIs to support governance, audit readiness, and capacity planning.

Data Modeling & Development
  • Develop robust semantic models using DAX and Power Query (M), applying industry best practices for performance, maintainability, and semantic consistency.
  • Build and maintain Power Query transformations with a strong command of M, ensuring clean, performant data shaping within the semantic layer
  • Design and develop governed, production-grade reports and dashboards balancing visual clarity, performance, and adherence to enterprise standards for layout, branding, and metric consistency
  • Leverage emerging AI and agentic capabilities in BI workflows; including MCP server integrations, Snowflake Cortex Analyst, and Power BI Copilot to accelerate development, enhance governed natural language querying, and extend the reach of self-service analytics.

Snowflake & Data Platform Collaboration
  • Work within DEC's Snowflake-based modern data platform; read, understand, and consume Gold-layer tables and semantic views produced by the data engineering team.
  • Collaborate with data engineers to align on data model definitions, semantic layer governance, and query optimization.
  • Participate in data quality discussions and contribute to the documentation of business logic in Snowflake.
  • Develop governed front-end snowflake artifacts for enterprise-wide use.

Business Partnering & Requirements
  • Partner cross-functionally with business units to understand decision needs, define requirements, and scope BI projects.
  • Facilitate working sessions and requirements workshops; translate business questions into actionable data and reporting solutions.
  • Apply structured requirements methodologies to ensure analytics output drives real business value.

BI Champion & Center of Excellence
  • Champion a data-driven culture across DEC; advocating for governed self-service analytics, consistent metric definitions, and responsible data usage.
  • Bring a platform-agnostic mindset to analytics delivery; deeply fluent in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, but capable of evaluating and adapting to emerging BI platforms
  • Contribute to the Power User Group (PUG) and broader BI community of practice; mentor business-side power users.
  • Stay current on Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and Snowflake roadmap features; proactively recommend adoption of capabilities that advance DEC's analytics maturity.

  • Strong DAX proficiency; base measures, time intelligence, semi-additive measures, calculation groups or equivalent patterns.
  • Solid Power Query (M) skills for data transformation and shaping.
  • Familiarity with SOX compliance considerations in a BI environment; including change control, audit logging, and version management of reports and semantic models.
