What are Data BI Engineers?

Data BI (Business Intelligence) Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain systems that transform raw data into meaningful business insights. They develop data pipelines, integrate various data sources, and create reports or dashboards to support decision-making processes. Their work ensures that companies have accurate, timely, and actionable information to drive strategy and operations. Data BI Engineers typically work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders.

What is the difference between Data Bi Engineer vs Data Analyst?

AspectData Bi EngineerData Analyst
Primary FocusBuilding data pipelines, data warehousing, and integrating data systemsAnalyzing data to generate reports and insights
Skills & ToolsSQL, ETL processes, data modeling, cloud platformsExcel, SQL, visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI
Work EnvironmentData engineering teams, IT departments, cloud environmentsBusiness units, analytics teams, management
CredentialsData engineering certifications, SQL, cloud certificationsData analysis certifications, SQL, visualization skills

While both roles work with data, Data Bi Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, whereas Data Analysts interpret data to provide actionable insights. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals for their data needs.

How does a Data BI Engineer typically collaborate with business stakeholders and data analysts?

A Data BI Engineer frequently works with business stakeholders and data analysts to understand data requirements, translate business needs into technical specifications, and ensure data solutions align with organizational goals. This role often involves participating in meetings to gather requirements, sharing progress updates, and iterating on dashboards or data pipelines based on feedback. Effective communication is key, as Data BI Engineers must bridge the gap between technical data structures and actionable business insights. Regular collaboration helps ensure that the data solutions provided are both technically sound and valuable for decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data BI Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data BI Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, SQL, ETL processes, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker, as well as experience with data warehouses and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating data insights into actionable business recommendations. These skills and qualities are essential for building reliable data solutions that empower organizations to make informed, data-driven decisions.

Job description

Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy Pharmacy Operations relies on timely, trusted data to deliver safe, efficient, and world-class customer experiences across Vet Services and Rx Fulfillment teams. We are looking for a Business Intelligence Manager to lead the analytics strategy, delivery roadmap, and team execution that help Pharmacy Operations leaders and operators understand performance, improve processes, and make better decisions each day.
In this role, you will partner directly with Operations, Operations Support, Technology, and other stakeholders to understand business problems, operational processes, and decision-making needs. You will lead a team of BI Engineers and Analysts to build scalable, governed data and analytics solutions that support daily business and operations decisions.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will be expected to set direction, lead projects, mentor and develop Team Members, improve team mechanisms, and still contribute directly to solution design, technical execution, and deep-dive analysis. Approximately 40% of this role will focus on hands-on execution, with the remainder on strategic ownership, people leadership, stakeholder partnerships, and delivery management.
What You'll Do
  • Own the BI strategy for Pharmacy Operations domains, ensuring analytics work aligns with business priorities, operational decision-making needs, and scalable data architecture.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of BI Analysts and Engineers by setting priorities, raising quality standards, clarifying expectations, reviewing work, and helping Team Members grow their technical, analytical, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Partner with stakeholders across Rx Fulfillment, Vet Services, Technology, Operations Support, and related teams to understand their processes, define problems, find opportunities, and translate ambiguous needs into clear analytics priorities.
  • Lead multi-functional BI and analytics projects from discovery through adoption, including scope definition, milestone planning, dependency management, risk communication, delivery, and post-launch measurement.
  • Own domain-level data products, dashboards, metrics, and reporting mechanisms that are accurate, trusted, scalable, maintainable, and adopted by business teams.
  • Establish and improve operating mechanisms for intake, prioritization, metric governance, documentation, data quality, recurring business reporting, and analytics delivery.
  • Design and deliver scalable curated datasets, data models, dashboards, semantic layers, and recurring reporting that support Pharmacy Operations.
  • Build, review, and improve SQL, data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and BI assets using best practices for performance, reliability, testing, validation, documentation, and long-term maintainability.
  • Perform and guide deep-dive analysis and root-cause investigations to explain performance trends, quantify impact, and recommend operational actions.
  • Communicate insights, tradeoffs, risks, and progress clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior operations and business leaders.
  • Champion standards for BI engineering and analytics quality, including code reviews, modeling conventions, metric definitions, validation routines, visualization best practices, and adoption of reusable analytics patterns.

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in Business Intelligence, Analytics Engineering, Data Engineering, or a similar analytics role, with experience delivering scalable data and reporting solutions for business or operations teams.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or developing BI, analytics, or data professionals, reviewing work, including setting direction, elevating quality standards, and helping others grow.
  • Demonstrated ownership of analytics domains, data products, or business-critical reporting ecosystems beyond individual dashboards, reports, or pipelines.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience building performant data models, curated datasets, dashboards, and reporting layers in a modern cloud data warehouse environment such as Snowflake or equivalent.
  • Solid understanding of data warehouse and BI concepts, including dimensional modeling, ETL/ELT patterns, metric definitions, data quality, documentation, and governed reporting practices.
  • Experience partnering with business and technical stakeholders to understand ambiguous problems, define requirements, manage priorities, and deliver analytics solutions supporting operational decision-making.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects, communicate tradeoffs and risks, manage dependencies, and drive work from discovery to delivery and adoption.
  • Self-starter attitude with strong ownership, sound judgment, and the ability to operate effectively through ambiguity.

Bonus
  • Formal people management experience in a BI, analytics, analytics engineering, or data engineering environment.
  • Experience with dbt or similar governed modeling frameworks.
  • Experience implementing data quality monitoring, alerting, or incident response patterns for analytics datasets.
  • Python experience for analysis, automation, or operational analytics workflows.
  • Experience supporting pharmacy, healthcare, fulfillment, operations, eCommerce, or other quality-sensitive operational environments.
