Data Annotation information

What does a data annotation do?

A typical workday as a Data Annotator involves reviewing datasets—such as images, audio, text, or video—and accurately labeling or categorizing information according to specific project guidelines. Most Data Annotators work independently, but they often collaborate with project managers or data scientists to clarify requirements and resolve ambiguities. Tasks may be repetitive, but adhering to precise standards is vital for maintaining data quality. Work environments can range from technology companies to remote or freelance settings, and advancement opportunities exist as team leads or quality assurance specialists for those who excel in consistency and reliability.

How much money can I make doing data annotation?

Data annotation jobs typically pay between $10 and $20 per hour, depending on the complexity of the task and the employer. Experienced annotators or those working on specialized projects may earn higher rates, especially if they have skills in specific tools or domains. Earnings can vary based on whether the work is freelance, part-time, or full-time, and some platforms offer bonuses for accuracy or speed.

What is a data annotation?

A Data Annotation job involves labeling and categorizing data, such as text, images, audio, or video, to help train machine learning models. Annotators apply tags, bounding boxes, or classifications to data based on specific guidelines. This process improves the accuracy of AI systems in recognizing patterns and making predictions. Many data annotation jobs require attention to detail and familiarity with specific domains. It is commonly used in applications like autonomous driving, natural language processing, and computer vision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in data annotation?

To thrive in Data Annotation, you need strong attention to detail, accuracy, and basic data handling skills, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with annotation platforms, data labeling software, or content management systems is frequently required, though specific certifications are rare. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to focus on repetitive tasks distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial because accurate and consistent data annotation directly impacts the quality of machine learning models and AI applications.

Job description

Meta is seeking an experienced Sourcing Manager to join our Strategic Sourcing team, focused on the Data Operations outsourcing programs that power our Gen AI efforts. This is a unique opportunity to partner with teams across Meta and shape the company's growth through effective sourcing solutions. Within Meta's Finance organization, Strategic Sourcing owns end-to-end indirect sourcing, market and spend analysis, contracting, and supplier strategy. As Sourcing Manager, Data Operations, you'll work closely with business and research teams across Meta and its affiliates to develop and execute sourcing, contracting, and purchasing strategies that drive business objectives. This is a fast-moving environment of rapid growth and experimentation, where the ability to pivot quickly is critical. The role supports global programs and requires international travel.
Responsibilities
Build collaborative relationships with key stakeholders across Meta to develop, implement, and optimize outsourcing and vendor management solutions for Gen AI data annotation and collection vendors
• Proactively identify, track, and manage risks and issues across programs
• Identify, develop, and deploy industry-leading supplier management, procurement, and category management practices
• Prepare and manage sourcing documents, contracts, statements of work, and related procurement documents, driving the legal, financial, and technical aspects of outsourced programs
• Lead contract negotiations that maximize value to the company
• Ensure program success through strong performance management and governance, in partnership with the business
• Manage complex sourcing projects end to end: planning, execution, measurement, and optimization
• Collaborate with our Sourcing Category, Contract Management, and Procurement Operations teams, along with cross-functional partners in Compliance, Privacy, Legal, and InfoSec
• Align regional and local processes to Meta's global operating model, applying established vendor management policies, standards, and practices
• Build and cultivate strategic relationships with key suppliers. Provide market intelligence and strategic sourcing updates to the leadership
• Manage, coordinate, and support special projects as needed
Minimum Qualifications
• 6+ years of sourcing experience, ideally in tech or AI domains
• Demonstrated success in negotiating complex contracts and managing vendor relationships
• Excellent program management skills, with a track record of building successful relationships across business stakeholders, cross-functional groups, and third parties
• Strong commercial negotiation skills, using multiple levers beyond rate (e.g., volume discounts, quality thresholds, speed to market, service levels)
• A deep understanding of balancing speed, quality, and cost in sourcing decisions for frontier models in a fast-paced Gen AI environment
• Proficiency in building and maintaining dashboards and reporting tools to support sourcing decisions
• Experience using data to drive sourcing and negotiation strategies
• Experience driving change and improving end-to-end processes
• Knowledge of the legal, financial, and technical components of outsourcing
• Experience in managing a global vendor portfolio
• Experience organizing complex workstreams and solving ambiguous problems by breaking them into structured, actionable steps
• Proven ability to synthesize complex information into crisp, executive-ready summaries for leadership audiences
Preferred Qualifications
• Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
• Experience sourcing annotations for ML/AI model development and/or large language model development
• Experience in managing high-volume data annotation sourcing programs
• Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
• Experience working in a startup or other dynamic, high-growth company
• Certification in project management or process improvement methodologies
• Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
• Experience working with BPOs, crowdsourced/freelance platforms, and boutique data vendors
