What is a Data Annotation job?

A Data Annotation job involves labeling and categorizing data, such as text, images, audio, or video, to help train machine learning models. Annotators apply tags, bounding boxes, or classifications to data based on specific guidelines. This process improves the accuracy of AI systems in recognizing patterns and making predictions. Many data annotation jobs require attention to detail and familiarity with specific domains. It is commonly used in applications like autonomous driving, natural language processing, and computer vision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Annotation position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Data Annotation, you need strong attention to detail, accuracy, and basic data handling skills, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with annotation platforms, data labeling software, or content management systems is frequently required, though specific certifications are rare. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to focus on repetitive tasks distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial because accurate and consistent data annotation directly impacts the quality of machine learning models and AI applications.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in a Data Annotation role?

A typical workday as a Data Annotator involves reviewing datasets—such as images, audio, text, or video—and accurately labeling or categorizing information according to specific project guidelines. Most Data Annotators work independently, but they often collaborate with project managers or data scientists to clarify requirements and resolve ambiguities. Tasks may be repetitive, but adhering to precise standards is vital for maintaining data quality. Work environments can range from technology companies to remote or freelance settings, and advancement opportunities exist as team leads or quality assurance specialists for those who excel in consistency and reliability.

Is data annotation a genuine job?

Data annotation is a legitimate job that involves labeling data such as images, text, or audio to help train machine learning models. It typically requires attention to detail and familiarity with annotation tools, and many companies hire remote workers for this role. The job is often part-time or freelance, with varying pay rates depending on complexity and volume of work.

Job description

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. We combine the principles of dynamic control and balance with sophisticated mechanical designs, cutting-edge electronics, and next-generation software for high-performance robots equipped with perception, navigation, and intelligence.
The Atlas team is focused on advancing machine learning and manipulation capabilities. We are seeking a highly organized and technically-minded Annotation Manager to lead and develop a team of Annotation Leads and Annotation QA Leads, manage relationships with third-party annotation vendors and service providers, and ensure the quality, consistency, and throughput of data annotations that power Atlas's machine learning systems. This role reports to the Atlas Data Operations Associate Director.
Schedule/Working Hours:
  • Monday - Friday: 40 hours per week, regular hours (e.g., 9 AM to 6 PM, with flexibility across both first and second shift as required).

Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Performance:
  • Directly manage a team of Annotation Leads and Annotation QA Leads, providing day-to-day direction, prioritization, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Serve as the Atlas working team lead for third-party annotation vendors, managing task allocation, performance accountability, and dual-source relationships to optimize cost and quality.

Annotation Quality & Operations:
  • Own the end-to-end quality of annotation output by partnering with ML Leads to establish and enforce quality benchmarks, monitor throughput and error rate metrics, and serve as the primary escalation point for labeling guideline ambiguities.
  • Write SOP's and technical/process/policy documents for the annotation team to follow
  • Forecast forward-looking annotation needs across all Atlas engineering stakeholders and drive continuous improvement initiatives including tooling feedback, workflow redesign, and SOP maintenance.

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, data science, or cognitive science preferred; proven experience managing teams in a data annotation or machine learning data pipeline environment required, with strong familiarity with annotation concepts and tooling platforms.
  • Prior experience managing third-party annotation vendors strongly preferred; strong computer proficiency with familiarity in ML data pipelines or computer vision, and exceptional organizational and communication skills required.

The base pay range for this position is between $100,000 to $128,000 annually. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience.
