What is a data annotation tech remote?

Data Annotation Tech Remote jobs involve working from home or another remote location to label, tag, or classify data such as text, images, audio, or video. This work is essential for training and improving artificial intelligence and machine learning models. Data annotators use specialized software tools to accurately identify and categorize data according to specific guidelines provided by employers. These roles require attention to detail, consistency, and sometimes subject-matter expertise, depending on the project. Remote data annotation jobs are popular because they often offer flexible schedules and the ability to work from anywhere.

What are some common challenges faced by remote data annotation techs, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Data Annotation Technicians often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent annotation quality, managing repetitive tasks, and ensuring clear communication with team leads or project managers. To address these, it's helpful to establish a structured daily routine, use collaboration tools to stay connected with the team, and regularly review project guidelines to ensure accuracy. Many organizations also provide feedback loops and quality assurance checks, so being proactive in seeking feedback can help improve performance and job satisfaction.

How much do remote data annotation tech jobs pay?

Remote data annotation technician jobs typically pay between $12 and $20 per hour, depending on experience, skill level, and the complexity of the annotation tasks. Some positions may offer additional benefits or flexible schedules, and pay rates can vary based on the employer and geographic location of the company. Entry-level roles often start at the lower end of the pay scale, while experienced annotators or those with specialized skills may earn higher wages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data annotation tech remote?

To excel as a Data Annotation Tech (Remote), you need attention to detail, basic computer literacy, and familiarity with data labeling practices, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Proficiency with annotation tools such as Labelbox, Supervisely, or proprietary platforms is typically required, and training in data privacy or quality assurance may be beneficial. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to focus independently are standout soft skills for this remote role. These competencies are crucial to ensure accurate, high-quality data labeling that directly impacts the effectiveness of AI and machine learning models.

Job description

The Engineering Manager, Data & AI Platform is responsible for leading teams that build, operate, and evolve Blackbaud's enterprise Data & AI platform-the foundation that powers analytics, data products, machine learning, and agentbased experiences across the company.

This role blends people leadership, platform ownership, and technical strategy. You will manage engineers working across modern data and AI infrastructure (Lakehouse, pipelines, feature services, ML enablement, observability, and governance), while ensuring the platform is scalable, secure, costefficient, and productoriented.

Success in this role requires strong engineering judgment, the ability to operate in ambiguity, and a passion for building platforms that accelerate teams and unlock business outcomes for the nonprofit sector.

What You'll Do

  • Own and evolve core Data & AI platform capabilities, including ingestion, transformation, lakehouse architecture, feature services, and AI/ML enablement layers.
  • Drive platform decisions aligned with Blackbaud's Unified Data & AI Platform Strategy (modularity, interoperability, AIfirst design)
  • Partner with Architecture, Governance, and Security to ensure the platform meets trust, compliance, and Responsible AI standards.
  • Balance build vs. buy decisions, prioritizing core competencies while reducing operational complexity.
  • Lead teams to deliver highimpact platform initiatives aligned to AOP priorities (legacy modernization, cloud migration, cost optimization, agent enablement).
  • Ensure platform reliability through operational excellence, including monitoring, incident management, and performance optimization.
  • Establish clear roadmaps, milestones, and success metrics for platform initiatives.
  • Hire, mentor, and grow highperforming platform engineers across geographies.
  • Provide regular feedback, coaching, and career development aligned with Blackbaud's people strategy.
  • Ensure every team member has clear goals, an active IDP, and opportunities to grow in modern Data & AI skills.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Data Science, Analytics, and Product Engineering teams to ensure the platform accelerates-not blocks-delivery.
  • Influence standards and best practices across the Data Intelligence COE.

What we'll want you to have:

  • 8+ years of experience in software, data, or platform engineering (.NET, Azure, Databricks, ADO preferred)
  • 3+ years of experience managing and developing data engineering teams.
  • Handson experience with modern data platforms, cloud data lakes/lakehouses, distributed processing, streaming, APIs
  • Strong understanding of platform engineering principles and operating production systems at scale.
  • Proven ability to lead through ambiguity and influence without authority.
