Job description

Lead Data Analyst

The Lead Data Analyst will be responsible for supervising Data Analysts and managing data analytics projects of varying complexity, working closely with the developers, engineers, operations, sales/marketing teams and customers. Utilizing data and tools from the PTEN+ Drilling Data Center and interfacing with stakeholders from across the company, the candidate will independently create actionable reports, algorithms, and models that will directly impact company efficiency of onshore drilling operations and contribute to development of new technologies. The candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of the team’s projects, including interviewing stakeholders to better understand underlying systems for analysis, cleaning and analyzing data, generating visuals and reports, and presenting results to stakeholders in a way that is clear and actionable. The ideal candidate would be a team player and leader, possess advanced data science skills, expert in working with large data sets in Python, think analytically and perform complex calculations, and be able to communicate clearly with numerous stakeholders of varying backgrounds across the company.

This role performs under general direction of the Director, Drilling Optimization and Data Center.

Detailed Description:

  • Manage and lead a team of data analysts working on different data science and analytics projects
  • Hire, mentor and train data analysts. Establish standards and guidelines for the team
  • Become the subject matter expert on the projects, mentor and coach team members on coding, visualization and project related queries
  • Quickly learn aspects of the drilling process and equipment to efficiently derive insights from our data
  • Be proactive and seek out buy-in for our analytics tools within the company
  • Be the focal point for analytics: work and communicate with multiple stakeholders, understand project requirements, and deliver analytics solutions
  • Track, analyze and act on KPI’s to improve drilling operations and communicate improvements
  • Assist with developing and improving our suite of data analytics applications and visualizations, including developing requirements and working with developers
  • Execute in parallel multiple analytics projects of varying complexity and data sources (~1 week to ~3 months; time series and relational databases)
  • Independently manage and execute above projects from start-to-finish, including understanding stakeholder needs; acquiring necessary data; cleaning / analyzing data and innovating beyond initial requirements; generating visuals / reports; and presenting results to stakeholders
  • Develop, deploy, and sustain real-time algorithms and models over time-series and relational database data with minimal memory and processing impact. Models will be integrated into cloud and edge-based architectures to model equipment health, human behavior, and optimal drilling practices

Job Requirements:

  • Prior experience or ability to quickly learn the details of oil and gas drilling
  • Experience leading a team of highly skilled data analysts, providing coaching and guidance to them through design and development of advanced algorithms
  • Have excellent soft skills to gain rapport within the organization and seek out buy-in for our analytics team
  • Able to articulate complex data science techniques to end-users that have minimum technical background
  • Experience working closely with multiple with product teams in the office as needed
  • Expert in programming to generate analyses, algorithms, and visuals
  • Able to generate complex visualizations and analyses quickly in a workshop environment
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously to meet challenging deadlines
  • Able to think strategically and translate concepts into action plans and track results
  • Comfortable explaining complex analytics concepts and results to end-users
  • Excellent verbal and written English Language communication

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Data Analytics, Computer Science, or related field
  • 2+ years’ leading/managing data analytics teams and complex data science projects
  • 5+ years’ experience in Python for data analysis (including Jupyter Notebooks, Pandas, Numpy, Matplotlib)
  • 2+ years’ experience in SQL and knowledgeable in general database design
  • 2+ years’ experience in analyzing and visualizing large time series data sets
  • 2+ years’ experience in developing Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence solutions (SKLearn, Tensorflow / Pytorch)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Engineering, Data Science/Analytics, Computer Science, or related field
  • Previous work in the oil and gas industry
  • Previous experience working in cross-functional roles and communicating directly with product users
  • Experience with big data architectures (Hadoop, Spark)
