What is a data analyst startup?

A Data Analyst in a startup is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to help drive business decisions. Unlike in larger companies, startup data analysts often wear multiple hats, working with raw, unstructured data, building dashboards, and providing strategic insights. They collaborate closely with product, marketing, and engineering teams to optimize processes and improve business performance. The role requires strong analytical skills, proficiency in SQL, Python, or R, and the ability to adapt quickly to a fast-paced environment. Since startups have fewer resources, data analysts must be proactive, resourceful, and comfortable with ambiguity.

What are some challenges a data analyst might face when working in a startup environment?

Data Analysts in startups often encounter rapidly shifting priorities and limited resources, which require them to adapt quickly and independently manage their work. You may find yourself setting up new data processes from scratch, dealing with incomplete datasets, or balancing multiple projects at once. Collaboration is frequent, as you'll typically work closely with founders, product managers, engineers, and marketers to deliver actionable insights. This environment fosters valuable learning opportunities and skill development, but it also demands flexibility, resourcefulness, and a willingness to take on diverse tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the data analyst startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst at a startup, you need strong quantitative skills, proficiency in data manipulation and statistical analysis, and often a degree in a related field like mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Python, R, Excel, and data visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI is highly beneficial, as is experience with cloud-based data storage. Adaptability, problem-solving, and excellent communication skills set standout candidates apart in this fast-paced environment. These capabilities are crucial because startup Data Analysts often wear multiple hats, working cross-functionally to extract actionable insights that directly influence business decisions.

Job description

Data Analyst
Company DescriptionSagetap is a rapidly growing startup changing how enterprise technology executives discover and evaluate software. Our AI-driven platform anonymously connects tech buyers with the industry's most credible technology vendors, helping them cut through the noise and solve their biggest problems.
Backed by investors like NFX Ventures, Uncorrelated Ventures, and Emergent Ventures, we are on a mission to fundamentally change software discovery for senior technology leaders, fostering meaningful connections in a non-sales setting.
We're a tight-knit, fast-moving team that values curiosity, transparency, and impact. If you're energetic, results-oriented, and excited to work in an early-stage environment, come help us shape the future of technology buying at Sagetap!
Job Description
As a Data Analyst at Sagetap, you'll serve as the strategic analytics partner to Product, Growth, Engineering, Design, and Leadership. You'll use data to shape product strategy, influence roadmap decisions, and identify the highest-impact opportunities for marketplace growth.
You'll own the product analytics function; from defining KPIs and experimentation frameworks to building trusted reporting and scalable datasets. Your work will help leadership understand what is happening in the business, why it is happening, and what we should do next.
San Francisco preferred, though we're open to remote for an amazing candidate.
What you will do
  • Serve as the strategic analytics partner to Product, Growth, Engineering, and Design, helping prioritize roadmap investments through quantitative analysis and marketplace insights.
  • Support growth by generating insights and reports from Sagetap proprietary data
  • Own the measurement framework for product initiatives by defining KPIs, evaluating feature performance, identifying root causes behind metric movement, and presenting recommendations to leadership.
  • Lead experimentation strategy by designing, evaluating, and scaling A/B tests and product experiments.
  • Build executive-ready dashboards, analyses, and self-service reporting that improve decision making across Product, GTM, and Leadership.
  • Create and maintain scalable analytics datasets using DBT and modern data modeling best practices.
  • Manage Database Categorization of our technology categories and vendors.
  • Partner with executive leadership to answer strategic business questions and influence company priorities through data.
  • Support growth by generating insights and reports from Sagetap proprietary data.
  • Research cybersecurity and AI markets to identify trends that inform product strategy.
  • Leverage LLMs to improve internal workflows and enrich Sagetap's product database.

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in Product Analytics, Data Analytics, Growth Analytics, or Data Science, preferably in B2B SaaS, marketplaces, or product-led growth companies.
  • Expert SQL, and experience using Python in a data engineering and analytics capacity.
  • Hands-on experience with DBT, Mixpanel and Omni (or similar BI tools), Git, experimentation frameworks, and modern data warehouses.
  • Experience defining KPIs and measurement strategies for product organizations.
  • Strong business judgment and ability to translate complex analyses into clear executive recommendations.
  • Experience influencing cross-functional teams and partnering with senior stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable thriving in ambiguity.

What we are looking for
  • Strategic thinker who connects data to business outcomes.
  • Ownership mentality with the ability to independently drive high-impact initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills.
  • Curiosity, experimentation mindset, and bias toward action.

What you will have at Sagetap
  • Compensation: $85,000 - $110,000 base salary, depending on experience
  • Early-stage equity
  • Competitive salary + 401(k)
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits
  • Real ownership in building a category-defining product
  • Opportunity to work closely with a high-performing, mission-driven team

Diversity drives innovation, enables better decisions to support our customers, and inspires change for the better. We're building a culture where differences are valued and welcomed. We work together to bring out the best in each other. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or any other applicable legally protected characteristics in the location in which the candidate is applying.
