Job description

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for National Institutes of Health (NIH) Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, maintain, and troubleshoot software solutions and research data workflows using Python and SQL.
  • Design, optimize, and support database queries, data integrations, and related processes for NIH-funded and privately funded research studies.
  • Collaborate with investigators, research staff, and technical stakeholders to translate study requirements into secure, reliable, and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Develop and support data pipelines, workflow automation, and analytics or reporting platforms.
  • Help maintain the integrity, quality, security, and appropriate handling of research data.
  • Document technical designs, data processes, software changes, and operational support procedures.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolving software, database, and data-processing issues throughout the research lifecycle.
General Responsibilities
  • Provide experienced analysis of existing data and data structures and satisfies ad-hoc reporting/analysis requests.
  • Create reporting specifications for new reports/dashboards/analytical tools and perform testing/validation; ensures integrity, accessibility, and accuracy of reports/dashboards and data structures; review and approve user requests for access to reporting data and tools.
  • Consult with faculty and/or staff to identify new business reporting needs and provide guidance and interpretation of complex environments and data.
  • Document data analysis efforts (data sources, reporting specifications, tools, issue/problem resolutions).
  • Perform experienced analysis to interpret and determine validity and quality of data.
  • Perform migration and conversion of data as needed in support of analysis efforts.
  • Research and stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and tools and make recommendations for implementation to improve data analysis services and approaches.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with data integration, ETL/ELT processes, data quality practices, or automated data workflows.
  • Experience working with sensitive or regulated data and following applicable security, privacy, and data-governance requirements.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
