Industrial Data Engineer

Job Overview

ESI is seeking an Industrial Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain data solutions that connect operational technology (OT) systems with enterprise analytics. This role develops scalable ingestion, transformation, and storage pipelines for SCADA platforms, relational databases, enterprise systems, and reporting tools. The position converts raw operational and business data into trusted datasets, dashboards, and automated reports used by engineering, operations, customers, and regulatory stakeholders.

Success in this role requires a builder's mindset, strong SQL and SCADA skills, comfort working with industrial systems, and the ability to translate operational needs into reliable data products. The Industrial Data Engineer supports the full delivery lifecycle, including requirements gathering, code development, testing, CI/CD, production deployment, documentation, user support, and ongoing optimization.

Work Location and Reporting

This is role based in Sisters, Oregon (Headquarters). The Industrial Data Engineer reports to the IT & Network Lead.

Key Responsibilities

· Develop intuitive dashboards and automated production reports for RNG facilities, internal stakeholders, external clients, and regulatory bodies such as the EPA.

· Create reliable, consumable data models for Power BI, Tableau, and other analytics tools, with clear definitions for KPIs, operational metrics, and data trends.

· Design, build, and maintain scalable data ingestion, transformation, and storage pipelines that support enterprise analytics and operational reporting.

· Integrate data from SCADA systems, including Ignition, FactoryTalk, Wonderware and similar platforms, with enterprise systems and analytics.

· Monitor and optimize dashboards, applications, queries, and pipelines; improve data integrity, security, availability, and performance.

· Develop and maintain software applications and scripts that support RNG facility operators, site owners, engineering teams, and business users.

· Connect software and data solutions with existing platforms used by RNG facilities, ensuring reliable data flow across systems.

· Use Git/GitHub and modern development practices to support code review, testing, deployment to production, and ongoing platform improvement.

· Provide technical support, documentation, and user training so teams can effectively use data tools, dashboards, and software solutions.

· Partner with engineers, project managers, facility operators, IT, and operations teams to understand needs and deliver practical, maintainable solutions.

· Maintain clear documentation for data pipelines, data models, software applications, integrations, dashboards, reports, and support processes.

· Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required / Core Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field preferred; equivalent practical experience will be considered.

· 3-4+ years of experience in data engineering, software development, business intelligence, analytics engineering, or a closely related technical role.

· Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or similar systems.

· Working knowledge of Python, JavaScript, HTML, and/or Java.

· Experience building dashboards and reports using Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools.

· Experience building ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines, and structured datasets from multiple source systems utilizing prefect and DBT or similar.

· Familiarity with SCADA or industrial automation platforms such as Ignition, FactoryTalk, Wonderware, or similar systems.

· Experience with Git/GitHub and development lifecycle practices such as code review, testing, CI/CD, and deployment support.

· Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, with attention to data quality and operational reliability.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.

· Ability to work independently, manage priorities, self-motivate, and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced team environment.


Preferred Qualifications

· Experience in renewable energy, renewable natural gas (RNG), utilities, industrial operations, or process manufacturing environments.

· Experience with time-series or historian data, SCADA tags, OPC UA, MQTT, APIs, or other industrial data integration patterns.

· Advanced SQL skills, including window functions, query optimization, deduplication, stored procedures, and performance tuning.

· Experience with cloud or modern data platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, AWS, Snowflake, Databricks, or similar technologies.

· Knowledge of AI, machine learning, advanced statistical methods, or predictive analytics.

· Understanding of OT/IT security, data governance, and documentation practices in industrial environments.
