Data Analyst Professional information

What is a data analyst professional?

Data Analyst Professionals are experts who collect, process, and analyze data to help organizations make informed decisions. They use statistical tools and techniques to interpret data sets, identify trends, and generate actionable insights. Their work often involves cleaning data, designing reports or dashboards, and communicating findings to stakeholders. Data Analysts typically work across various industries, such as finance, marketing, healthcare, and technology. They play a crucial role in helping businesses optimize operations and achieve strategic goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data analyst professional?

To thrive as a Data Analyst Professional, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and typically a degree in a quantitative field such as mathematics, computer science, or economics. Familiarity with data analysis tools and programming languages like SQL, Python, R, and visualization software such as Tableau or Power BI, along with certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate, are highly valued. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting data and presenting actionable insights. These skills and qualities are crucial for transforming complex data into valuable business intelligence that drives informed decision-making.

What are the most common challenges data analyst professionals face when working with cross-functional teams?

Data Analyst Professionals often collaborate with teams from marketing, product, engineering, and management, each with different data needs and levels of technical understanding. A common challenge is translating complex data findings into actionable insights that are accessible to non-technical stakeholders. Additionally, aligning data priorities, ensuring data integrity across sources, and managing multiple project deadlines can require strong communication and organizational skills. Building relationships and setting clear expectations early on can help overcome these challenges and ensure productive cross-team collaboration.

Job description

Job Description Link Technologies (LinkTechConsulting.com), a Las Vegas-based IT consulting firm, is currently seeking a Data Visualization Analyst - Facilities to join our team. Position Summary Under general direction, leads business requirements gathering to design and develop interactive, high-performance dashboards that translate complex data into actionable business insights for a Facilities Services Unit. Serves as a front-end analyst who prioritizes data interpretation, data storytelling, UI/UX design, and direct collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the final product effectively answers business questions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Builds and administers dashboards and graphics using Tableau and other related data visualization software. Designs and builds complex, interactive dashboards and visual reports using Tableau Desktop, applying UI/UX best practices (hierarchy, color theory, optimized layouts, tooltips, actions, and parameters) to ensure insights are accessible to non-technical stakeholders. Acts as a data storyteller by translating complex datasets into intuitive narratives, creating low-fidelity mockups to align with stakeholders on the "story arc" prior to development.

Designs "Guided Analytics" pathways where a user is led from a high-level KPI down to granular PostgreSQL row-level detail through dashboard actions. Authors and optimizes Custom SQL within Tableau Desktop-utilizing advanced SQL syntax such as Window Functions and CTEs-to shape data at the source and deliver dashboard interactivity. Builds high-performance Tableau data models using the Logical Layer (Relationships) to connect to PostgreSQL tables, ensuring data integrity without the need for physical ETL or intermediary storage.

Collaborates with stakeholders to translate business needs into technical specifications and KPIs, and partners with Database Analysts to communicate requirements for new views or indexes. Maintains clean, well-documented workbooks-including field descriptions and calculation comments-to ensure seamless maintenance and transparency. Develops and conducts quality assurance checks to test, validate, and evaluate data visualizations for accuracy, performance, and alignment with end-user requirements.

Resolves end-user inquiries proactively and maintains effective communication with customers throughout the dashboard development process. Conforms to safety standards, as prescribed. Performs other tasks related to the position as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics A highly visual data storyteller who specializes in transforming complex PostgreSQL data into high-performance, intuitive Tableau dashboards through optimized live queries and superior UI/UX design. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Position Expectations) Knowledge of statistics and analyzing data sets; running queries, report writing, and presenting findings; data models, database design development, data mining, segmentation techniques; and record keeping, including security procedures for handling confidential data. Knowledge of Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep.

Knowledge of statistical analysis software and methods. Deep understanding of Gestalt principles, visual hierarchy, and best practices for choosing the right chart type for specific data stories. Mastery of SQL fundamentals (Joins, CTEs, Unions) and familiarity with Postgres-specific functions (Window functions, Date/Time intervals, JSONB parsing).

Knowledge of the Tableau "Order of Operations" and the distinction between Logical Layer (Relationships) and Physical Layer (Joins). Understanding of the "Test-to-Production" deployment workflow within a managed server environment. Ability to build interactive features such as dynamic parameters, set actions, and dashboard navigation to create a guided analytical experience.

Skill in designing, building, and maintaining Tableau dashboards. Skill in using Tableau to create dashboards using various types of data. Skill in writing clean Custom SQL that minimizes database load and maximizes dashboard refresh speeds for live connections.

Proficiency in designing clean, clutter-free interfaces that prioritize the most critical KPIs and eliminate unnecessary visuals. Ability to take a vague business request and sketch out a logical data path that answers the core question. Ability to work effectively with Database Analysts to identify whether performance bottlenecks are in SQL queries or the Tableau front end.

Ability to perform rigorous data validation to ensure dashboard accuracy against the source of truth. Ability to plan and organize work to meet deadlines. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

Possesses physical and mental stamina appropriate for the responsibilities of the position. Position Requirements Education, Training, and Experience High school graduation or equivalent (GED, foreign equivalency, etc.). Five (5) years of professional experience in data analysis, reporting, or visualization, including at least two (2) years of experience designing and developing dashboards using Tableau Desktop; OR Associate degree in a related field and two (2) years of relevant experience, including at least one (1) year designing dashboards using Tableau Desktop; OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of combined relevant experience

Demonstrated ability to write basic to intermediate SQL queries (SELECT, JOIN, WHERE) against a relational database (PostgreSQL preferred). Proven ability to translate complex or vague business questions into clear, actionable visual insights. Experience may include professional work, internships, or academic capstone projects.

Licenses and Certifications High school transcript or equivalent documentation. Valid driver's license or state-issued identification. College transcripts (if applicable).

Portfolio demonstrating Tableau dashboards, data storytelling, and user-driven design. Documentation of training and experience supporting qualifications. Preferred Qualifications Completion of a Data Analytics bootcamp or Tableau certification (with portfolio).

Working knowledge of facilities management, construction, or maintenance terminology. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Data Analytics, or a related field. Experience with ArcGIS Dashboards and/or ArcGIS Story Maps.
