Job description

Every day, we work together for what matters – bold, swift, and equitable climate action.

ABOUT THE ROLE
At 3Degrees, we are committed to advancing a decarbonized future through bold, swift, and equitable climate action. We do this work by originating, marketing, selling, and trading environmental commodities. As a member of our Research and Analysis team within the Environmental Markets (EM) division, you’ll apply your analytical and strategic expertise to conduct portfolio analysis, develop reporting tools and processes used by multiple stakeholders, and enhance our informational capabilities.

As a Trading Portfolio Analyst, you'll play a critical role in shaping our approach to the environmental commodities market while driving real-world impact. You will apply strong quantitative and communication skills to the analysis of our portfolios, positions, and commodity pricing in order to deliver insights that sharpen our trading edge. Your responsibilities will include developing internal reporting and reconciliation tools, as well as translating complex datasets into actionable insights for both portfolio managers and non-technical stakeholders. In a word, you will help shape what we know and how we know it. Your expertise will go beyond supporting the trading desk. You’ll challenge conventional thinking, identify strategic gaps, and introduce innovative solutions to improve cross-functional performance.

This is a full-time opportunity within the 3Degrees Environmental Markets division, based in Portland, ME. Exceptional candidates within commuting distance to our office hubs in San Francisco, CA; Portland, Oregon; or New York, NY will also be considered.

Please Note: 3Degrees does not provide sponsorship or work authorization assistance; therefore, pre-existing right-to-work status is a prerequisite to be considered for this position.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
You will work cross-functionally to improve portfolio valuation, internal reporting processes, and strategic decision-making. Your work will focus on three key areas:

  • Reporting & Portfolio Valuation & Reconciliation
    • Manage, execute, and deliver weekly portfolio valuation reports and performance updates for key front-office stakeholders, portfolio managers, and executive leadership
    • Maintain, troubleshoot, and support critical downstream Excel workbooks used by Trading Associates and Portfolio Managers to track positions and market values
    • Design, maintain, and execute financial reconciliations (e.g., trial balances, valuation stacks, exchange-to-system position matching) to ensure accurate reporting across tools
    • Act as a responsive communication bridge between non-technical stakeholders, traders, and risk management to explain valuation movements and resolve data questions
  • Process Optimization & AI Automation
    • Audit existing workflows to identify manual steps, streamline processes, and eliminate redundant clicks across workbooks
    • Identify, pilot, and deploy low-code AI interventions and agentic tools (e.g., Copilot Studio, Glean, RPA) to automate routine tasks like report generation and distribution
    • Utilize Python and modern data platforms (such as Power BI, Databricks, or Microsoft Fabric) to transition manual reports into scalable, automated solutions
  • Portfolio Analysis & Quantitative Modeling
    • Support the development and refinement of proprietary models using Python, Excel, and Power BI to analyze portfolio positioning and performance
    • Translate complex quantitative outputs and datasets into clear, actionable reports for trading decision-makers
    • Bandwidth permitting, partner with internal teams to analyze risks and opportunities across North American REC and clean fuel markets (e.g., LCFS, CCA)

Requirements

ABOUT YOU
You are an analytical thinker with a strong foundation in quantitative analysis, financial concepts, and research. You excel at interpreting complex trends, identifying opportunities, and delivering actionable insights. Your strategic mindset and problem-solving skills enable you to proactively refine processes and optimize portfolio performance.

You thrive in fast-paced environments, balancing independent research with collaborative teamwork. You are detail-oriented, capable of building robust processes that ensure data precision, and can effectively communicate complex findings to key stakeholders. You are also self-motivated, with a strong desire to drive environmental market growth in North America and beyond.

We believe an individual who possesses the following skills will thrive in this role:

Key Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in quantitative data analysis
  • Demonstrated financial or accounting literacy, with an understanding of reconciliations, trial balances, or fund accounting logic (e.g., valuation stacks, balance checks, and dataset matching)
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, with proven experience building, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex downstream workbooks and reporting templates
  • Functional proficiency in Python for data manipulation, process automation, and general scripting
  • Familiarity with Power BI and DAX (or strong proficiency in Tableau accompanied by a willingness to transition to Power BI)
  • Familiarity or strong interest in leveraging AI tools (LLMs) and low-code platforms (e.g., Copilot Studio, Glean, RPA) to automate routine workflows and streamline reporting processes. Knowledge of Databricks or Microsoft Fabric is a plus
  • Meticulous attention to detail, with a strong ability to detect data anomalies, perform sensitivity analysis, and ensure absolute reporting accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to translate complex, dense data into clear, digestible formats for non-technical stakeholders and leadership
  • Highly collaborative, stakeholder-first approach (“How can I help?”) with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and process feedback quickly
  • Ability and willingness to work in-person at our office in Portland, Maine
  • BA/BS degree in economics, finance, statistics, computer science, or a related quantitative field preferred

HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS

Within 30 days:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of 3Degrees’ portfolio and trading objectives through onboarding assessments and participation in strategy meetings
  • Build meaningful relationships with stakeholders across trading, risk, regulatory affairs, sales, and data management by attending at least three collaborative discussions
  • Provide at least two data-backed insights during weekly performance reviews, contributing to strategy discussions
  • Complete training on key reporting tools (Power BI, Python, Excel) to improve forecasting accuracy and automation

Within 90 days:

  • Take full ownership of routine reporting and performance reviews for the North America Trading team, ensuring timely and accurate delivery with minimal supervision
  • Produce at least three actionable insights using Power BI, Python, and Excel, successfully integrating them into trading strategies with feedback from the trading team

Within 6 months:

  • Design and automate at least three solutions for reports on positions, performance, and pricing, establishing yourself as an authority on our informational processes
  • Complete a pilot of an agentic AI solution to enhance workflow efficiency
  • Take full ownership of the tool suite underpinning the reconciliation and summary of our positions as well as the weekly portfolio valuation
  • Facilitate the consolidation of fragmented valuation inputs into enterprise storage

Within 1 year:

  • Develop an internal reporting environment in Power BI to clearly surface multiple dimensions of the portfolio in a comprehensive, near-real-time view
