Data Analyst Intern (Public Policy)

National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA), located in Arlington, VA, was founded in 1938 and is the national trade association representing the jurisdictions that control the distribution and sale of beverage alcohol within their borders. The mission of NABCA is to support member jurisdictions in their efforts to protect public health and safety and ensure responsible and efficient systems for beverage alcohol distribution and sales.

NABCA's Public Policy Team has an immediate vacancy for a temporary Data Analyst Intern. The Public Policy team is responsible for policy analysis, advocacy, and research on key public policy issues related to the organization's mission. The Data Analyst Intern will perform research, data mining, validation, analysis, etc. assignments to assist the Public Policy Team. The Data Analyst Intern will support the efforts of the Public Policy Team as they work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and communities, to assist NABCA members with building evidence-based policies and programs that promote public health and safety. The Data Analyst Intern reports to the Director, Public Policy.

Duties: The Data Analyst Intern performs the following duties:

  • Develop an understanding of the organization's mission and public policy program's research and data and statistical analysis objectives.
  • Provide general data and statistical analysis by performing research and data mining tasks; collect, transform, clean, and validate data from multiple sources as assigned.
  • Prepare basic syntheses and regular updates of data and statistical analyses projects.
  • Develop basic data models and produce statistical reports that highlight and/or visualize key insights for use by the Public Policy Team as requested.
  • Assist with updating dashboards for internal and external user interface.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings; perform other special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university actively pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in data science, statistics, or a related field. Previous experience as a Data Analyst intern is highly desirable. Public health coursework is a plus. Recent graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills are required.
  • Recent experience using statistical software to analyze data is required. Must have recent experience using Power BI, Tableau, SPSS, SAS, R, etc. Must have strong analytical skills and an understanding of data visualization best practices. An intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Teams, and Outlook is required.
  • Recent experience conducting data and statistical research accessing various datasets is required. Must have recent experience conducting data mining tasks-collecting, transforming, cleaning, and validating data from multiple sources, etc.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify and resolve data errors are essential.
  • Must be a fast learner with initiative who can produce work that is accurate and complete. Must have strong organizational, planning, and time management skills and be able to meet assignment deadlines.
  • Must be reliable, professional, flexible, a team player with a positive attitude, and possess excellent communications skills.
  • A passion for or interest in public health is highly desirable.
