Can a data analyst work as a financial analyst?

A data analyst can transition to a financial analyst role since both positions require strong analytical skills, proficiency in data tools like Excel and SQL, and an understanding of financial concepts. However, financial analysts often need knowledge of accounting, finance, and sometimes certifications like CFA, which may require additional training or experience. The skills overlap can facilitate a career shift, but specific financial knowledge is typically necessary for success in a financial analyst role.

Is AI replacing financial analysts?

AI is automating certain tasks performed by financial analysts, such as data analysis and reporting, but it is not replacing the role entirely. Financial analysts still rely on critical thinking, interpretation, and strategic decision-making that AI tools currently cannot fully replicate. Professionals in this field need to develop skills in data analysis, programming, and financial modeling to stay competitive as AI integration increases.

Is a financial analyst the same as a data analyst?

A financial analyst and a data analyst are different roles; a financial analyst focuses on analyzing financial data to guide investment and business decisions, often using tools like Excel and financial modeling, while a data analyst works with broader data sets across various domains, utilizing tools like SQL and data visualization software. Both roles require strong analytical skills but have different industry focuses and skill sets.

Financial analysts generally tend to earn higher salaries than data analysts due to the specialized financial knowledge required and the nature of their work. However, salaries can vary based on experience, industry, location, and certifications like CFA or CPA. Both roles often require proficiency in tools like Excel, SQL, and data visualization software.

Job description

We are a leading global software company dedicated to the world of computer aided design, 3D modeling and simulation- helping innovative global manufacturers design better products, faster! With the resources of a large company, and the energy of a software start-up, we have fun together while creating a world class software portfolio. Our culture encourages creativity, welcomes fresh thinking, and focuses on growth, so our people, our business, and our customers can achieve their full potential.
Joining our dynamic FP&A team within one of the most exciting business units at Siemens offers a unique global platform for your personal and professional growth. You'll be an integral part of a data-driven, business-minded, and diverse team, driving crucial financial planning, accurate forecasting, and insightful financial performance analysis. Through your contributions, you will provide vital transparency on financial performance, enabling informed assessments and strategic decision-making for key stakeholders, including the CFO.
Financial Analyst - FP&A & Data Science (Transform Data into Business Decisions)
At Siemens Digital Industries Software, we help the world's leading manufacturers design, simulate, and build better products through industry-leading software solutions. As part of our Finance Performance & Analysis (FP&A) team, you'll have the opportunity to combine the disciplines of finance, data science, analytics, and business strategy to influence decisions at the highest levels of the organization.
We're looking for a unique individual who is equally excited by understanding business performance and financial outcomes as they are by building analytical models, automating processes, uncovering insights, and leveraging AI and advanced analytics to solve complex problems.
This is not a traditional FP&A role focused solely on reporting and budgeting. It's an opportunity to help shape the future of Finance by applying data science techniques to forecasting, decision support, performance management, and business optimization.
You will work closely with Finance leaders, operational teams, business stakeholders, and senior executives, including the CFO, to transform data into actionable insights that drive growth, profitability, and strategic decision-making.
What You'll Do
Drive Financial Planning and Performance Management
  • Lead key FP&A processes, including monthly forecasting, quarterly business reviews, annual planning, and long-range financial modeling.
  • Analyze financial performance and business results, identifying key drivers, risks, and opportunities.
  • Support executive decision-making through data-driven recommendations and scenario analysis.
  • Partner with business leaders to understand operational performance and connect business activities to financial outcomes.

Apply Data Science and Advanced Analytics
  • Analyze large and complex datasets from financial, operational, and commercial systems to identify trends, patterns, and predictive indicators.
  • Develop statistical, predictive, and driver-based models to improve forecast accuracy and business planning.
  • Design analytical frameworks that provide deeper insights into revenue growth, profitability, cost management, and organizational performance.
  • Perform root-cause analysis using quantitative techniques to uncover business drivers and strategic opportunities.

Build Modern Data & Reporting Solutions
  • Create and maintain dashboards, visualizations, and self-service reporting solutions using modern BI tools.
  • Leverage data from systems such as SAP, Hyperion, Power BI, and enterprise data warehouses to generate actionable insights.
  • Help develop scalable datasets and reporting structures that improve transparency and decision-making across the organization.

Accelerate Finance Transformation
  • Identify opportunities to automate reporting, forecasting, and analytical processes.
  • Apply AI and machine learning concepts to improve Finance capabilities and efficiency.
  • Partner with Finance and IT teams to modernize FP&A processes through digitalization and automation.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that increase speed, accuracy, and analytical depth.

Tell the Story Behind the Numbers
  • Translate complex analyses into compelling business narratives for senior leadership.
  • Develop executive-ready presentations that connect data, business context, and strategic recommendations.
  • Present findings to Finance leaders and business stakeholders in a clear and impactful way.

What We're Looking For Education
Bachelor's degree in one of the following disciplines: Finance, Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Business Analytics, Computer Science or Engineering
Master's degree (MBA, Data Analytics, Statistics, Economics, Data Science, or related field) is a plus.
Experience
  • 3+ years of experience in FP&A, Business Analytics, Data Science, Corporate Finance, Consulting, Business Intelligence, Strategy, or a related analytical function.
  • Experience working with large datasets and translating quantitative insights into business recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with stakeholders and influence decisions through data and analysis.

Technical & Analytical Skills
We are looking for a candidate who combines strong financial acumen with advanced analytical capabilities.
Finance & Business Skills
  • Financial modeling and forecasting.
  • Budgeting and planning processes.
  • Business performance analysis and KPI development.
  • Understanding of P&L, operating expenses, and business drivers.

Data Science & Analytics Skills
  • Data exploration, data preparation, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience developing predictive or driver-based models.
  • Ability to work with structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Knowledge of AI, machine learning, or advanced analytics concepts.

Preferred Technical Skills
  • Advanced Excel.
  • Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools.
  • SQL and data querying.
  • Python, R, KNIME, Alteryx, or similar analytical platforms.
  • Experience working with enterprise systems such as SAP, Hyperion, or enterprise data warehouses.

Success in This Role
The ideal candidate is someone who:
  • Thinks like a financial analyst but approaches problems like a data scientist.
  • Is naturally curious and enjoys finding patterns in data.
  • Can move seamlessly between detailed analysis and executive-level storytelling.
  • Is energized by solving ambiguous business problems.
  • Seeks opportunities to automate, innovate, and challenge existing approaches.
  • Wants to help shape the future of Finance through AI, analytics, and digital transformation.

Why Join Our Team?
You'll join a highly visible global FP&A organization that is actively evolving toward a more analytical, data-driven, and technology-enabled future. This role offers a rare opportunity to combine:
Finance + Data Science + AI + Business Strategy
while working directly with senior leadership on the decisions that shape the future of one of the world's leading software companies.
