Dash Hls Video information

What are the common challenges faced by professionals working with DASH and HLS video streaming technologies?

Professionals working with DASH and HLS video streaming often encounter challenges such as ensuring smooth adaptive bitrate switching, minimizing latency, and maintaining compatibility across various devices and platforms. Managing content protection (DRM), optimizing video encoding settings, and troubleshooting playback issues due to network variability are also frequent hurdles. Collaboration with backend engineers, QA testers, and frontend developers is essential to deliver a seamless streaming experience and to quickly resolve any technical issues that arise.

What are DASH and HLS video streaming protocols?

DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) and HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) are popular protocols used to deliver video content over the internet. Both methods break video files into smaller segments and adjust video quality in real time based on the viewer's internet speed, ensuring smooth playback. DASH is an open standard developed by MPEG, while HLS was created by Apple and is widely supported on Apple devices. Both protocols support adaptive bitrate streaming, encryption, and live or on-demand content. Choosing between DASH and HLS often depends on the target devices and specific project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DASH/HLS Video Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DASH/HLS Video Engineer, you need expertise in video streaming protocols (MPEG-DASH, HLS), video encoding, and a strong background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with media servers (like Wowza or Nimble), video processing tools (such as FFmpeg), and cloud platforms is typically required, along with knowledge of DRM and content delivery networks (CDNs). Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for optimizing video delivery and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure high-quality, reliable video streaming experiences for users and efficient troubleshooting of complex technical issues.

In this role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of ad serving solutions that power brand advertising across Apple TV live sports and Apple News. You will define the strategy and roadmap for ad insertion techniques, ad decisioning logic, and real-time creative transcoding and delivery systems.
Description

* Drive technical requirements for ad pod management, competitive separation, frequency capping, and advanced targeting capabilities within the video ad serving stack
* Partner with streaming video engineering teams to optimize ad break signaling, and client-player integration for both HLS and DASH protocols
* Establish measurement and quality standards for video ad delivery, including ad start rates, completion rates, error tracking, quartile reporting, and latency monitoring
* Collaborate with measurement and attribution teams to implement video standards, integration with verification vendors, and advertiser reporting capabilities
* Work closely with campaign management teams to ensure video creative specifications, transcoding workflows, and ad serving capabilities support advertiser needs and industry standards
* Coordinate with partner and infrastructure teams to ensure video ad delivery meets performance SLAs, scales globally, and handles peak traffic during live events
* Create comprehensive technical documentation of video ad serving workflows, data flows, API specifications, and system architecture diagrams
* Develop detailed product requirement documents (PRDs) with clearly defined acceptance criteria, user stories, and edge case handling for engineering teams
* Build and maintain product roadmaps with prioritized feature development, technical debt management, and platform scalability initiatives
* Communicate complex technical concepts to executive leadership, translating video ad serving performance into business impact and strategic recommendations
Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with ability to balance short-term execution with long-term strategic vision
Track record of influencing cross-functional teams without direct authority and building consensus across engineering, sales, and operations
Understanding of TV advertising workflows and how digital video fits within broader brand advertising strategies
Minimum Qualifications
5-7 years of product management experience with at least 2+ years focused specifically on video ad serving, dynamic ad insertion, or streaming video advertising technologies
