The City of Pasadena is seeking talented, creative, passionate, and experienced instructors to develop after school programming for school age children in the After School Adventures Program.
Instructors will be responsible for creating curriculum and implementing lessons and workshops in a variety of subjects including recreational sports, fitness and wellness, arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, science, and nature. These are part-time positions working up to 19 hours per week.
The ideal candidate for the Instructor position is expected to cultivate a participant-centered, inclusive, and engaging recreational experience in the After School Adventures Program. Instructors are required to lead groups of children, develop recreational programming and instruct age-appropriate lessons daily. Key attributes include strong communication skills, patience, empathy, and a commitment to fostering critical thinking and developmental growth in participants. Instructors must identify tasks that others can handle and delegate to Recreation Leaders, Interns, and Volunteers. Planning duties include outlining expected program outcomes, creating timelines and deadlines for tasks and preparing lists of necessary resources for their site.

Afterschool Adventures Program
Instructors work with students in an afterschool setting developing activities and lesson plans for school-aged children. The ideal after-school Instructor candidate will possess recent experience developing and teaching recreation classes in arts & crafts, dance, drama, music, science, or sports & fitness.
Afterschool Adventures Program Instructors must be available to work Mondays - Fridays in the after-school hours. Mondays from 12:00pm- 6:00pm and Tuesdays through Fridays from 2:00pm-6:00pm.
Essential Functions

• Develops and teaches a variety of lessons and workshops in recreation program areas such as arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, science, computers, nature, fitness and wellness, and sports for youth and/or adults.
• Implements programming and provides positive reinforcement to encourage a fun and supportive environment.
• Establishes, and maintains cohesive group participation.
• Adjusts and continually improves material flexibility in response to student needs, innovations in the field, and technological delivery options.
• Provides supervision in the absence of the Site Coordinator.
• Provides support to other recreation sites as needed.
• Determines and recommends supplies and equipment needed for assigned classes; transports and ensures the security of equipment and supplies issued.
• Continually observes and takes the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of program participants.
• Promotes good public relations for the City; builds community relations with park, afterschool site, and/or community center patrons, participants, community and other City Departments.
• Maintains records (attendance reports, progress reports, program planning proposals and accident reports) and submits reports in a timely manner.

Qualification Guidelines
Minimum qualifications:

• A minimum of one year of recent experience teaching recreational activities or one year of education in Recreation/Physical Education or related field, or combination.

Desired qualifications:

• Individuals with two or more years of recent experience teaching recreation activities for youth and/or adults will be deemed most qualified.

Selection Process:
The selection process may consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, Subject Matter Expert (SME) review and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a written, structured interview, performance examination, and/ or departmental selection interview.
Vacancies Information:
There are currently several vacancies in the Afterschool Adventures Program. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future. These positions are at-will, part-time up to 19 hours per week.
FICA Alternative Plan:
The City of Pasadena does not participate in Social Security. In lieu of Social Security, hourly employees who are not already members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) are automatically enrolled in the FICA Alternative plan administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) upon date of hire. Employees contribute 7.5% of the gross earnings on a pre-tax basis to the plan.
Existing CalPERS members*
The City of Pasadena contracts with the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to offer a defined benefits program for eligible employees.
"New" CalPERS members are subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and receive the following benefit formula: 2% at 62
*Please note that City Service Workers are excluded from the City's contract with CalPERS. Thus, existing CalPERS members also will be enrolled in the FICA alternative plan administered by PARS instead.
Health Insurance:
The City contracts with CalPERS to offer several comprehensive health plans that include Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) to hourly employees who work at least 30 hours a week.
