Job Description

Telemundo Arizona (KTAZ/KHRR) in Phoenix, AZ, is seeking a Assignment Desk Editor -  Multiplatform who thrives in a fast-paced, rapidly changing newsroom. This position is at the heart of our daily news operation, serving as the nerve center of newsgathering while also playing a key role in digital and multi-platform content production.

The ideal candidate will not only manage traditional desk duties but also adapt to audience trends, help shape coverage with relevant context for younger and digital audiences, and ensure our journalism resonates across broadcast, digital, and social media.

Responsibilities

  • Story Discovery & Logistics
    • Monitor desk phones, scanners, wires, social media, and community contacts for breaking and developing news.
    • Curate and update the Dalet daybook with story ideas, planned coverage, and daily events.
    • Dispatch reporters, MMJs, and photographers, coordinating logistics, live shots, and resources.
    • Lead and participate in editorial meetings, bringing strong editorial judgment and audience-driven ideas.
    • Produce a weekend newscast and serve as a backup producer when needed.
    • Strong criteria in national, local politics, Government, and Law enforcement.
  • Digital & Multiplatform Content
    • Publish and update news content across digital, OTT, and social platforms, ensuring timely and engaging coverage.
    • Create content tailored for vertical video and social platforms, adding "wings" (side context such as temperatures, hashtags, key bullet points, or quick facts) to enhance relevance for younger audiences.
    • Push alerts, headlines, and live streams with accuracy, speed, and clarity.
    • Edit video for broadcast, streaming channels, and social platforms.
    • Fast-paced and under pressure role.
  • Collaboration & Community
    • Work together with producers, anchors, and reporters to maximize resources and coverage.
    • Cultivate community contacts and relationships with PIOs, law enforcement, and officials.
    • Stay informed on local, state, and national news, sharing updates with newsroom staff as needed. 
  • Enterprise & Forward Planning
    • Identify enterprise story opportunities aligned with station research and leadership direction.
    • Maintain newsroom calendars and plan coverage for upcoming events, community issues, and special projects.
    • Support special projects and investigative initiatives, including undercover or long-form reports.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as an Assignment Editor, Producer, or in a newsroom role.
  • Bilingual: Spanish and English (written and spoken) required.
  • Strong editorial judgment, writing, and research skills.
  • Familiarity with newsroom computer systems (Dalet, iNews, or similar).
  • Ability to thrive under pressure, prioritize quickly, and handle multiple assignments at once.
  • Strong understanding of digital and social publishing tools, analytics, and audience engagement strategies.
  • Knowledge of journalistic ethics, FCC rules, libel/slander laws.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.

  • Passion for breaking news and being the first to inform the community.
  • Creative thinker comfortable experimenting with new storytelling formats.
  • Familiar with the Arizona news landscape, particularly Phoenix and Tucson.
  • Highly collaborative and able to communicate clearly across all newsroom roles.
  • Flexible schedule, willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.
