Cytogenetics is a field of genetics that focuses on the study of interactions between chromosomes and cells. Cytogenetics research concentrates on the analysis of specific genetic traits that lead to conditions like chronic conditions or hereditary diseases. In this specialized field of science, you use techniques like fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization to assay, or test, chromosomes and isolate traits that may cause cells to react or develop in a certain way. This field of science also includes the study of the banding of chromosomes, which helps scientists differentiate between chromosomes.
| Aspect | Cytogenetics | Molecular Genetic Technologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Certification (e.g., ASCP), Bachelor's in Medical Laboratory Science or related field | Certification (e.g., ASCP), Bachelor's in Medical Laboratory Science or related field |
| Work Environment | Laboratories analyzing chromosomes, karyotyping, and cytogenetic tests | Laboratories performing DNA/RNA analysis, PCR, and genetic testing |
| Industry Usage | Hospitals, clinical labs, research institutions | Hospitals, research labs, biotech companies |
Both cytogenetics and molecular genetic technologists require similar credentials and often work in clinical laboratory settings. Cytogenetics focuses on chromosome analysis and karyotyping, while molecular genetic technologists specialize in DNA/RNA testing and molecular techniques. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus within genetic testing fields.
