Job description
The Administrative Director of Genetics and Genomics Services (GGS) provides operational leadership across the Molecular Diagnostics Lab, Cytogenetics Lab, Clinical Cancer Genomics Lab, Genomics Medicine Lab, and Genomics Services Administration at UCSF Health. Reporting directly to the Chief Genomics Officer, this role ensures flawless daily operations and drives program development, test menu expansion, and continuous improvement in support of UCSF Health's clinical genomics mission.
The Administrative Director directly oversees the performance, growth, and integration of the following service areas:
- Cytogenetics Lab,
- Molecular Diagnostics lab,
- Genomics Medicine Lab,
- Clinical Cancer Genomics Lab, and
- Genomics Services Administration
This role requires prior experience managing high-complexity clinical genomics laboratories, with deep knowledge of genomic wet lab workflows, assay development, and laboratory automation technologies. The Administrative Director is responsible for aligning day-to-day operations and staffing with organizational priorities and clinical needs. This position plays a critical role in defining success metrics, and enabling high-quality, scalable genomic services. The Administrative Director leads the preparation of proposals and business cases for new test offerings, service innovations, and capital investments, working collaboratively with laboratory directors and the Chief Genomics Officer. With responsibility for approximately 35,000 annual lab tests and over $75 million in gross revenue, the Director ensures effective resource utilization, financial stewardship, and continuous improvement, while positioning the program for ongoing expansion to meet the evolving demands of UCSF Health.

UCSF Health Genetic and Genomic Services is a world leader in genetic diagnosis, counseling, and testing, spanning pre-conception, prenatal, neonatal, cancer, pediatric and adult conditions. We are a leader in innovative clinical, diagnostic and educational services for local, state, national and international patients. We provide genetic services throughout the system in a financially responsible and cost-effective manner, partnering with UCSF Health's leading clinicians, researchers, and innovators.

Provides operational oversight of the Molecular Diagnostics Lab and Cytogenetics Lab as well as the Clinical Cancer Genomics Lab and Genomics Medicine Lab. Directly manages Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLSs), lab managers and supervisors, and the Bioinformatics Director; ensures adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans, staffing plans, and performance requirements. Establishes and monitors productivity levels to ensure optimal utilization of staff and resources, and ensures all laboratory processes and staffing are consistently optimized for quality, compliance, and throughput.

Provides operational leadership informed by deep understanding of genomic wet lab workflows, including next-generation sequencing (NGS), cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostics. Partners with laboratory directors to evaluate, implement, and optimize laboratory technologies, automation platforms, and end-to-end workflows (sample accessioning through reporting) to improve scalability, quality, and turnaround time.
Develops, in collaboration with GGS lab directors and Chief Genomics Officer, operational and strategic objectives that are consistent with long term strategies for Genetics and Genomics Services. Leads the development of written proposals and business cases for test menu expansions and service innovations, including clinical utility justification, workflow feasibility, staffing impact, and financial projections; coordinates validation planning with laboratory directors prior to submission to the Chief Genomics Officer.

Participates in developing, prioritizing, and implementing operational processes and quality control systems to ensure and improve quality laboratory services, including the laboratory information system (LIS). Recommends laboratory policies regarding safety and productivity. As applicable, develops standard operating procedures to implement new processes.

Financial Resources and Stewardship:
- Coordinates the resource needs for GGS labs, including building and justifying the annual operating budget and presenting to lab leadership.
- Prepares and reviews variance analyses of budgeted revenues and expenses. Responsible for review and analysis of all laboratory-related purchasing and payer contracts and investigating discrepancies in both expense and revenue budgets.
- Prepares capital equipment requests, return-on-investment (ROI) analyses, and business case proposals for capital budget, contingency capital, or other funding sources; supports lab managers and supervisors in preparing supporting documentation.
- Reviews reimbursement trends and collaborates with Revenue Cycle team t identify opportunities for improvement.
- Maintains dashboards to monitor financial performance and implement appropriate actions based on identified opportunities for improvement.
- Coordinate with supply chain regarding instrument selection and the management of service and reagent contracts.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
