What is cycle counting in inventory control?

Cycle counting in inventory control is a process where a small subset of inventory is counted on a specific day instead of performing a full physical inventory count. This method helps organizations maintain accurate inventory records by regularly checking and correcting discrepancies. Cycle counting is less disruptive than full inventory counts and can be scheduled so that all items are counted over a set period. It improves inventory accuracy, supports better decision-making, and helps identify issues like theft or misplacement early. Many companies use cycle counting as part of their ongoing inventory management strategy.

What are the most common challenges faced in a Cycle Counting Inventory Control role, and how can they be managed effectively?

One of the most common challenges in a Cycle Counting Inventory Control role is ensuring the accuracy of inventory records amidst frequent stock movements and operational changes. Discrepancies can arise from miscounts, misplaced items, or system errors. To manage these challenges, professionals in this role often rely on standardized counting procedures, regular reconciliation of physical and system records, and close collaboration with warehouse and procurement teams. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, and leveraging inventory management software can greatly improve accuracy and efficiency.
