What is a cybersecurity data scientist?

A Cybersecurity Data Scientist is a professional who applies data science techniques to identify, analyze, and mitigate cyber threats. They use large datasets, machine learning, and statistical analysis to detect patterns of malicious activity and develop models to predict and prevent cyber attacks. This role bridges the gap between cybersecurity and data analytics, helping organizations strengthen their security posture by turning data into actionable insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cybersecurity data scientist?

To thrive as a Cybersecurity Data Scientist, you need a strong background in computer science, statistics, and cybersecurity principles, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in data analysis. Familiarity with tools like Python, R, machine learning frameworks, and security information and event management (SIEM) systems is essential, as well as certifications such as CISSP or CompTIA Security+. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex threats and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are critical for identifying security vulnerabilities and developing data-driven solutions to protect organizations from evolving cyber threats.

How do cybersecurity data scientists typically collaborate with IT and security teams to address emerging threats?

Cybersecurity Data Scientists work closely with IT and security teams to identify vulnerabilities, analyze security logs, and develop machine learning models that detect anomalies. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to translate complex data insights into actionable recommendations for incident response. Regular collaboration is key, as these professionals must ensure their algorithms align with real-world security protocols and integrate seamlessly with existing systems. This teamwork enhances both proactive threat detection and rapid response to security incidents.

What is the difference between Cybersecurity Data Scientist vs Cybersecurity Analyst?

AspectCybersecurity Data ScientistCybersecurity Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Data Science, Cybersecurity, or related fields; certifications like CISSP, CEHBachelor's in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or related; certifications like CompTIA Security+, CISSP
Work EnvironmentData-driven roles, analyzing large datasets, developing modelsMonitoring security systems, incident response, threat analysis
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, finance, healthcare, governmentAny organization with cybersecurity needs, including government and private sectors

While both roles focus on cybersecurity, a Cybersecurity Data Scientist specializes in analyzing data to identify patterns and develop predictive models, whereas a Cybersecurity Analyst primarily monitors security systems and responds to threats. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping environments, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and skill set.

In the Technology division, we leverage innovation to build the connections and capabilities that power our Firm, enabling our clients and colleagues to redefine markets and shape the future of our communities. This is a Lead Cyber Security Operations position at Vice President level, which is part of the job family responsible for monitoring, detecting, and responding to security incidents to ensure the organization's systems and data are protected from actual and potential threats or breaches.

Since 1935, Morgan Stanley is known as a global leader in financial services, always evolving and innovating to better serve our clients and our communities in more than 40 countries around the world.

What you'll do in the role:

  • Administer, configure, and support enterprise workload protection platforms (e.g., Wiz, Prisma Cloud Compute) across global Kubernetes environments.

  • Design, deploy, and maintain workload protection solutions across Kubernetes platforms including OpenShift, AKS, EKS, and GKE.

  • Partner with Kubernetes platform teams to onboard new clusters and ensure consistent deployment, integration, and operation of workload protection capabilities.

  • Develop and maintain automation and deployment solutions using GitOps tools and methodologies, including Helm, Argo CD, and FluxCD, while integrating security capabilities into enterprise CI/CD pipelines.

  • Manage platform configuration, upgrades, policy deployment, and lifecycle activities to ensure high availability, operational resilience, and security coverage.

  • Troubleshoot platform, deployment, networking, and integration issues across Kubernetes and cloud environments, driving continuous improvements in reliability and scalability.

  • Develop automation using Python, PowerShell, or similar scripting languages to improve operational efficiency and platform management.

  • Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, DevOps, and application teams, while participating in Agile ceremonies and engaging with technology stakeholders to enhance existing and future technology solutions.

  • Communicate regularly with product leads across the technology organization and discuss opportunities for improvement to existing and future technology solutions.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 6+ years of experience administering enterprise Kubernetes/OpenShift platforms, with hands-on experience deploying and operating cloud-native security platforms such as Wiz, Prisma Cloud Compute, or similar workload protection solutions.

  • Deep expertise with Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes, including deployment, configuration, upgrades, and lifecycle management of Wiz Kubernetes Connectors, Admission Controllers, Wiz Sensors, Workload Scanners, and Outpost Lite infrastructure across on-premises and cloud environments.

  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes security and networking, including RBAC, Admission Controllers, Pod Security Standards, Network Policies, Ingress, Services, DNS, workload identity, image scanning, runtime protection, and TCP/IP networking.

  • Experience deploying and managing Kubernetes applications using Helm, Argo CD, FluxCD, and GitOps methodologies, with integration into enterprise CI/CD pipelines using GitHub, Git, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.

  • Experience with enterprise automation and infrastructure engineering using Python, PowerShell, Bash, REST APIs, and HashiCorp Vault or equivalent secrets management technologies.

  • Strong Linux administration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning skills, with experience supporting Kubernetes workloads across OpenShift, AKS, EKS, and GKE, as well as AWS, Azure, and GCP cloud platforms.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively with Platform Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, Application Development, and Cybersecurity teams to build and operate secure, scalable enterprise workload protection services.
