Electrical Engineer 1

Location- Birmingham, AL

Contract- 3 years.

Engineer โ€“ Grid Operations and Planning Research Department: Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC), Research & Development Company: Southern Company

About SGVAC

The Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC) is a cutting-edge innovation hub within Southern Company's Research & Development department. SGVAC focuses on the research, pre-operational development, assessment, and demonstration of situational awareness technologies for Transmission and Distribution systems.

Key focus areas include:

  • Synchrophasor technology
  • Next-generation control center functionalities
  • Cybersecurity testing
  • New visualization techniques
  • DERMS platform evaluation
  • Data analytics
  • Power system modeling and simulation using Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) with hardware-in-the-loop testing

Position Summary

This position supports the Grid Operations and Planning Research area and focuses on deploying and evaluating emerging technologies for grid operations. The engineer will work on tools that support power system analysis, modeling, big data analytics, and visualization.

Additional project areas may involve:

  • Integration of Distribution Management Systems (DMS)
  • Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS)
  • Application of engineering analysis to modern power system challenges

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute research plans to evaluate new technologies
  • Manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively

Education & Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (required)
  • Specialization in Power Systems (preferred)

  • Knowledge of databases, data structures, and computer networking is a plus
