What is a cyber security internship?

A cyber security internship is a temporary position designed to give students or entry-level professionals practical experience in protecting computer systems and networks from cyber threats. Interns typically work alongside experienced security professionals, assisting with tasks such as monitoring network activity, analyzing potential security incidents, and learning about tools and techniques used in the industry. These internships provide valuable hands-on training and can help individuals decide if a career in cyber security is right for them, as well as build important skills for future employment.

Can you get a cybersecurity internship with no experience?

Cybersecurity internships often accept applicants with little or no prior experience, especially if they demonstrate strong foundational knowledge, such as understanding of networking, operating systems, or security concepts. Many programs value enthusiasm, relevant coursework, certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Cisco's CCNA, and a willingness to learn. Internships are designed to provide training, so prior experience is not always required to apply.

What do you do as a cyber security internship?

A cybersecurity internship involves assisting with protecting computer systems and networks from cyber threats, often by monitoring security alerts, analyzing vulnerabilities, and supporting security measures. Interns typically gain experience using tools like firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and security information and event management (SIEM) platforms while developing skills in threat analysis and security protocols.

Can I get a cyber security internship?

Cyber security internships are available for students and entry-level candidates interested in gaining practical experience in areas like network security, threat analysis, and security tools. Applicants typically need relevant coursework, basic knowledge of security concepts, and sometimes certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or Cisco CCNA Security. Internships often require a commitment during summer or semester breaks and may involve working with security teams or on real-world projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cyber security intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cyber Security Intern, foundational knowledge in networking, information security principles, and computer systems is essential, often supported by coursework or a related degree in progress. Familiarity with security tools such as Wireshark, Kali Linux, and basic scripting, as well as certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Cybersecurity Fundamentals, are highly advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and adapt to evolving threats. These abilities are crucial for developing practical expertise, identifying vulnerabilities, and contributing to a secure organizational environment.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a cyber security internship?

As a Cyber Security Intern, you will typically assist with monitoring network activity, analyzing security incidents, conducting vulnerability assessments, and supporting the implementation of security protocols. Interns often collaborate with senior analysts to research emerging threats and may participate in developing or testing security tools. The work environment is usually team-oriented, providing opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and gain hands-on experience with real-world security challenges.

Job description

Associate Cybersecurity Specialist at IBM

As an Associate Cybersecurity Specialist at IBM, you'll help organizations protect critical systems, data, and operations from evolving cyber threats while enabling secure digital transformation and AI adoption. As part of our cybersecurity practice, you'll help clients strengthen their cyber resilience across areas such as threat detection, security monitoring, vulnerability management, incident response, governance, risk, compliance, and security assessments. Based on business needs, your skills, and your interests, you'll have opportunities to develop specialized expertise across CyberDefend or Cyber Threat Management while building a broad foundation in cybersecurity consulting.

No two projects are exactly alike. You could support healthcare, financial services, public sector, retail, or manufacturing clients. Work side-by-side with experienced security consultants, threat analysts, incident responders, architects, and AI specialists to solve real-world security challenges. You'll help clients strengthen cyber resilience while gaining experience protecting critical systems that support organizations around the world. We're not looking for cybersecurity experts; we hire for potential, curiosity, and a passion for learning, and we'll help you grow through mentorship, certifications, structured learning, and hands-on client experiences.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid: 4 days a week in office based on project requirements

To give yourself the best opportunity for success, we advise applying only to roles that align with your skills and experience, rather than applying broadly across all entry-level positions. You'll receive a status update email for each application, so be sure to check your IBM Careers account regularly โ€” it's the best way to get a centralized view of which roles you have active applications against.

You don't need to be an expert to get started. We're looking for individuals with a strong foundation, a growth mindset, and a desire to learn and make an impact. Bring your curiosity. Grow your skills. Build what's next, like an IBMer.

Currently completing or recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

Foundational knowledge of cybersecurity principles, networking, operating systems, and information security concepts.

Understanding of common cyber threats, vulnerabilities, attack techniques, and security best practices, with an interest in helping organizations identify, reduce, and manage cybersecurity risks.

Exposure to security monitoring, incident response, vulnerability management, identity and access management, or risk management concepts through coursework, labs, projects, cyber competitions, or internships.

Foundational understanding of Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, and the cybersecurity opportunities and risks associated with emerging technologies.

Exposure to cloud technologies, enterprise environments, or cybersecurity tools through coursework, labs, certifications, projects, or personal learning.

Demonstrated application of cybersecurity, technical, or analytical skills through coursework, labs, projects, cyber competitions, research, internships, or personal learning.

Exposure to cybersecurity operations, threat management, governance, risk, compliance, or security-related projects through academic, personal, or internship experiences.

Ability to analyze security risks and communicate technical concepts clearly while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to help clients strengthen their cybersecurity posture.

Experience working with cloud security concepts, security monitoring tools, threat intelligence, vulnerability assessment, or recognized security frameworks through coursework, projects, labs, or internships.
