The mission of the ERCOT Summer Internship Program is to partner with students pursuing academic excellence to create opportunities that stretch learning experiences into a work environment with intellectually challenging projects and assignments. These opportunities will promote utility industry awareness, growth, and identification of top talent for future employment. The summer internship will be 40 hours a week during the summer.

Summary of Responsibilities

The Cyber Security Intern will support Cyber Security teams with projects and operational activities designed to provide practical experience across multiple areas of information and cyber security. Responsibilities may include:

  • Assist with cyber security projects, assessments, research, and operational activities.
  • Support the identification, analysis, documentation, and remediation of cyber security risks and vulnerabilities.
  • Assist with reviewing security alerts, events, trends, and other security-related data.
  • Support security monitoring, incident response, vulnerability management, security engineering, architecture, or governance activities.
  • Assist with evaluating technologies, systems, applications, and processes for alignment with cyber security requirements and industry best practices.
  • Research emerging cyber security threats, vulnerabilities, technologies, and industry trends.
  • Develop and maintain cyber security documentation, procedures, standards, inventories, reports, and technical guidance.
  • Assist with data collection, analysis, and reporting of cyber security metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Participate in the development or improvement of security processes, workflows, controls, and automation.
  • Collaborate with Cyber Security, Information Technology, and business teams on security-related initiatives.
  • Assist with security awareness, communications, or educational materials as needed.
  • Shadow and engage with cyber security professionals to gain exposure to areas such as Security Operations, Security Architecture, Identity and Access Management, Governance, Risk and Compliance, Vulnerability Management, and Security Engineering.
  • Document project findings, recommendations, lessons learned, and opportunities for continued improvement.
  • Prepare and present project results and recommendations to Cyber Security leadership and other stakeholders.
Project Deliverables

Depending on assigned projects, deliverables may include:

  • Cyber security assessments, analyses, or research.
  • Documentation of current-state security processes, technologies, risks, or controls.
  • Security procedures, standards, guidelines, checklists, or workflows.
  • Risk findings and recommended remediation actions.
  • Cyber security metrics, dashboards, reports, or inventories.
  • Process or technology improvement recommendations.
  • Security awareness or communication materials.
  • Documentation supporting security operations or engineering activities.
  • Final presentation summarizing project objectives, work completed, findings, recommendations, and lessons learned.

Desired Educational Level (Degrees earned or being sought by the Candidate)

  • Pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Cyber Security, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Electrical Engineering or related discipline

Experience (if any):

  • No minimum work experience required

Preferred Experience:

  • Understanding of basic cyber security concepts and principles
  • Basic knowledge of networks and IT systems

Preferred work schedule of the intern:

  • 40 hours a week / Monday - Friday 8AM - 5PM
  • Must be available to work onsite - Interns will not be eligible for remote work.

Oursummer internship program is a paid learning experience targeting primarily for students who have a GPA of 3.0 or better and who have at least completed their sophomore year.
