Job description

Overview
We are seeking a full-time Team Leader Cyber Security at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership for a team of security engineers focused on designing, building, and maintaining the organization's security infrastructure and tooling. This role requires both deep technical expertise and the ability to guide engineers through complex implementation challenges, ensuring security solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with enterprise architecture standards.
Essential Functions
  • Lead day-to-day activities of a small cybersecurity team (typically 3-5 associates) including task assignments, workload balancing, and prioritization
  • Serve as a senior technical resource and escalation point for complex issues and incidents
  • Mentor and coach junior team members; provide guidance on technical and professional development
  • Contribute directly as an individual contributor in addition to leadership responsibilities
  • Coordinate with the Manager on team performance, staffing needs, and project status
  • Maintain and update team documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures
  • Ensure team adherence to organizational security policies, standards, and procedures
  • Manage expenses, participate in budgeting process, and cultivate vendor relationships for any software or tools owned by the team in alignment with manager and/or director.
  • Lead engineering design and implementation efforts for security platforms including EDR, email security, cloud security, and network security controls
  • Review and approve architecture designs, configuration standards, and technical documentation produced by the team
  • Provide technical mentorship to security engineers on tooling integration, automation, and platform management
  • Collaborate with Security Operations and Compliance teams to translate operational needs into engineering requirements
  • Evaluate and recommend new security technologies, tools, and vendor solutions
  • Lead technical troubleshooting for complex platform issues and escalations
  • Manage and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code repositories, and GitOps workflows for security tooling
  • Drive automation initiatives to reduce manual effort and improve detection and response capabilities
  • Ensure security platforms meet availability, performance, and compliance requirements

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or another relevant field AND a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in the team's primary domain
  • Prior experience in an informal leadership, mentorship, or senior technical role
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical issues for varied audiences
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise security platforms (e.g., SIEM, EDR, DLP, firewalls,email security)
  • Proficiency with scripting and automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible)
  • Experience with cloud security architecture (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices, GitOps workflows, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to perform under pressure during incidents
