What is cyber defense?

Cyber defense refers to the strategies, technologies, and processes used to protect computer systems, networks, and data from cyber attacks and unauthorized access. Professionals in this field work to detect, prevent, and respond to threats such as hacking, malware, and phishing. Cyber defense involves monitoring systems for vulnerabilities, implementing security protocols, and regularly updating defenses to stay ahead of evolving threats. It is a critical component of information security for businesses, governments, and individuals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cyber defense, and why are they important?

To thrive in Cyber Defense, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, and relevant qualifications such as a degree in computer science or information security. Familiarity with security tools like SIEM systems, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and certifications such as CISSP or CEH are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills are crucial to proactively identify vulnerabilities, respond to threats, and ensure the ongoing protection of organizational assets.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in cyber defense roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Cyber Defense often face challenges such as rapidly evolving cyber threats, managing large volumes of security alerts, and ensuring timely incident response. Keeping up with new attack techniques requires continuous learning and regular training. To address these challenges, teams typically leverage advanced security tools, participate in threat intelligence sharing, and collaborate closely with IT and other business units. Maintaining effective communication and fostering a culture of continuous improvement are also crucial to staying ahead of cyber threats.

What is the difference between Cyber Defense vs Cyber Security Analyst?

Cyber Defense and Cyber Security Analyst roles share many certifications and work environments, but Cyber Defense typically emphasizes active protection and threat mitigation within defense teams, while Cyber Security Analysts focus on monitoring and analyzing security incidents. Both are vital in safeguarding digital assets, often working together within security operations centers.

What can you do with a cyber defense degree?

A cyber defense degree prepares individuals for roles such as cybersecurity analyst, security engineer, or incident responder, focusing on protecting computer systems and networks from cyber threats. Graduates often work with security tools, protocols, and certifications like CISSP or CompTIA Security+ to enhance their skills and job prospects.

The Cyber Defense Fielding and Integration (F&I) Lead supports the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) on the Integrated Research and Development for Enterprise Solutions (IRES) contract. In this critical role, you will ensure that all targeted systems successfully establish connectivity and achieve continuous monitoring compliance with the designated Cybersecurity Service Provider (CSSP). You will bridge the gap between technical system owners and cyber defense operations, ensuring seamless integrations with minimal operational disruption.

Key Responsibilities

System Discovery & Readiness

  • Lead comprehensive technical evaluations of targeted systems in close coordination with system owners and network engineers.
  • Assess current system architectures, logging capabilities, and overall readiness for cybersecurity integration.
  • Document and analyze each system's technical baseline, cyber defense platform compatibility, and identify network or configuration prerequisites (e.g., firewall modifications, agent deployments) that must be resolved prior to onboarding.

Integration Planning & Resourcing

  • Develop standardized, system-specific onboarding plans that clearly outline the technical methodology for integration.
  • Quantify the required Level of Effort (LOE) and create accurate resource estimates for each system integration.
  • Establish and manage approved schedules to ensure predictable onboarding phases, clear technical requirements, and minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

CSSP Validation & Continuous Monitoring Compliance

  • Ensure the CSSP achieves complete, actionable visibility into newly onboarded systems to satisfy cybersecurity monitoring mandates.
  • Verify that the cyber defense platform successfully receives, properly parses, and accurately categorizes all ingested data.
  • Validate that data flows meet CSSP continuous monitoring requirements to enable effective cyber threat detection and incident response capabilities.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be able to coordinate technical requirements across distinct teams (e.g., system owners, network engineers, and security operations).

Resumes, in month and year format, must be submitted with application in order to be considered for the position. The selected candidate may be assigned as an employee for one of our teammate companies.

Basic Requirements:

  • Must have 6, or more, years of general (full-time) work experience

  • Must have 4, or more, years of directly related experience
  • Must have 1, or more, years of experience working in an IT management or leadership role
  • Must have a strong understanding of network architecture, enterprise logging capabilities, SIEM platforms, and cyber defense toolsets.
  • Must have proven experience working with or within a Cybersecurity Service Provider (CSSP) framework, specifically regarding continuous monitoring mandates.
  • Must have the demonstrated ability to develop integration plans, quantify Level of Effort (LOE), and manage technical deployment schedules.
  • Must have a current IAT Level II Certification (Security+ CE) or be able to obtain within 3 months of hire
  • Must be able to maintain a restricted badge and work on site 4+ days per week
  • Must have, or obtain, an active DoW Secret Security Clearance

Desired Requirements:

  • Have a current IAT Level III Certification (SecurityX CE, CISA, CISSP, etc.)
  • Have experience in Impact Level 5 (IL5) or higher secure environments.

This position will be posted for a minimum of 3 days. If a candidate has not been selected at that time, it will continue to be posted until a suitable candidate is selected or the position is closed.
