Cut To Length Operator information

What is a Cut To Length Operator?

A Cut To Length Operator is a skilled worker who operates machinery designed to cut metal or other materials from large coils or sheets into specified lengths. They are responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining the cutting equipment, ensuring that materials are cut accurately according to production requirements. Their duties often include measuring materials, monitoring equipment for safety and quality, and troubleshooting minor mechanical issues. Cut To Length Operators play a crucial role in manufacturing environments where precise material sizing is essential for further processing or assembly.

What is the difference between Cut To Length Operator vs Shearing Machine Operator?

Industry UsageCommon in metal fabrication, steel processing, and manufacturingUsed in metal fabrication, steel industry, and manufacturing sectors
Job FocusMeasuring, cutting, and preparing materials to specified lengthsShearing and cutting materials to size using shearing equipment

Both roles involve cutting materials in manufacturing settings, with overlapping skills in machine operation and safety. The main difference lies in the specific equipment used and the focus of the tasks, with the Cut To Length Operator primarily handling length-specific cuts and the Shearing Machine Operator focusing on shearing processes.

What are some typical challenges a Cut To Length Operator might face on the job, and how can they be addressed?

Cut To Length Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining precise measurements while working at high speeds, handling frequent machine adjustments for different materials, and ensuring equipment is running safely and efficiently. Addressing these challenges involves staying vigilant about quality control, regularly inspecting and calibrating machinery, and following strict safety protocols. Good communication with team members, such as maintenance technicians and supervisors, can also help quickly resolve issues and minimize downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cut To Length Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cut To Length Operator, you need a solid understanding of industrial machinery, basic math skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with measuring tools, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and material handling systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork skills help operators ensure precision and efficiency. These competencies are vital to maintain safety, minimize waste, and meet production targets in a manufacturing environment.

General Summary
Join a hands-on, high-energy team where you'll help bring metal castings to life. In this role, you'll remove shell material from molds, separate cast parts using an oxy/acetylene torch, and prepare components for the next stage of production. If you enjoy working with tools, solving physical challenges, and seeing the results of your work every day, you'll feel right at home here.
What You'll Do
  • Work safely, always - follow safety rules, operate equipment responsibly, and report hazards.
  • Prep molds for action using forklifts, air guns, hammers, or a vibrating hammer to get them ready for pour-cup removal.
  • Blast away shell material using a Waterblast cabinet to reveal the cast beneath.
  • Cut parts free with an oxy/acetylene torch - a key step in transforming raw molds into usable components.
  • Grind and smooth using belt grinders or handheld air grinders to remove gates and refine castings.
  • Slice with precision on a Tannewitz friction-cutting bandsaw to remove gating or collect test material.
  • Deep-clean molds using shotblast and sandblast cabinets to reach pockets and tight spaces.
  • Measure with confidence using dimensional tools during specific cut-off operations.
  • Pitch in where needed with additional tasks assigned by management.
What You'll Bring to the Team
  • Safety mindset - you work carefully and responsibly in an industrial environment.

  • Experience with cutting torches and handheld power tools is a big plus.
Physical Requirements
This is an active, physical role. You should be able to:
  • Work confidently with hand and power tools.
  • Climb stairs, stoop, reach, and perform hands-on tasks throughout the day.
  • Lift and move molds weighing up to 35 lbs from cooling tables into blasting cabinets.
Compensation

  • Regular Performance Reviews
  • Advancement Opportunities
  • Paid Vacation & Holidays
  • Excellent Benefits
