Responsibilities

Summary:

The Academic Instructor maintains a classroom environment that facilitates the teaching of Adult Basic Education, English Language Development, and basic subjects required to pass the GED or equivalent examination. Teaches one or more subjects including, but not limited to reading, mathematics, and language arts.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Academic Instructor provides classroom instruction in the areas of basic education subjects including career planning, social adjustment, and general life/skills knowledge.
  • May instruct conversational English, and ideas and customs in English to students with limited English proficiency.
  • The Academic Instructor maintains records including testing, daily inmate/detainee work, attendance and general record keeping.
  • Evaluates and maintains inmate/detainee academic progress.
  • The Academic Instructor provides individual tutoring.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Possess or be eligible to apply for a State of Florida Educator’s certificate. (Non-Certified applicants must obtain a State or Florida Educator’s Certificate within twelve (12) months of hire.)
  • Two (2) years of relevant teaching experience preferred.
    • NOTE for Veterans/spouses ONLY: If applicant is a Veteran or a Veteran’s spouse (in Florida), they can apply and receive a Temporary License if they meet the following:
      • Minimum of forty-eight (48) months of military service with an honorable/medical discharge.
      • Minimum of sixty (60) college credits with a 2.5 grade point average.
      • Passing score on a Florida subject area examination.
